GANNON WRESTLERS CLOSE
FIRST HOME DUAL WITH A WIN
 
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon University wrestling team won its first dual of the season Wednesday evening with a win over the Mercyhurst North East Saints. The 35-9 win puts the Golden Knights at 1-0 in dual matches. Mercyhurst North East is 2-1.
   
Greg Sumenig bested Gannon’s Chris Santucci (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) with a 5-1 decision at 125. Mercyhurst North East’s only other win came at 197 by forfeit.
   
Freshman Ethan Swope (Luthersburg, Pa./DuBois Area) struck back with a 14-8 decision over James Henderson at 133.     Mike Sanders (Albion, N.Y./Albion) pinned Shawn Spath in 3:52 at 141. Gannon won 149 by forfeit.
  
Zack McKendree (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) posted a 14-3 major decision at 157 with a win over Mike Wiseman. Brandon Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) followed with an 8-4 win by decision over Mercyhurst North East’s Josh Miller.
   
At 174, Gannon’s Chris Daniels (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) recorded a 15-7 major decision over Jeff Broduer. A.J. Sayles (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) earned his second pin with a defeat by fall over Nathan Kucknick (5:40) at 184.
   
Heavyweight Frank McGrath (Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) blanked Ross Hayden 7-0 for the win by decision.
   
The Golden Knights take on rival Mercyhurst College at the War At The Shore on Friday, December 14. The annual event will be held at the Erie Civic Center. The dual’s starting time is to be announced.
