GANNON WRESTLERS TAKE THIRD
AT ASHLAND INVITATIONAL
 
ASHLAND, Ohio - The Gannon University wrestling team placed nine wrestlers at the Ashland Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Golden Knights finished in a third-place tie with Notre Dame (Ohio) behind event-winner Mercyhurst College and host Ashland University.
   
Maryland-native Corey Bowers (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) placed first at 133 with a 4-0 run in the bracket. Redshirt-sophomore Kevin McElhaney (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) earned top honors among 141-pounders with a 3-0 overall record and two pins.
   
A.J. Sayles (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) went 3-1 at 174 on the day, taking second place in a match that went into sudden death. Heavyweight Frank McGrath (Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine) also placed second at the Ashland Invite. McGrath finished 2-1.
   
Ed Marshall (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook) earned third-place honors with his 3-1 day at 125. Pino Scavella (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) placed third at 184. The redshirt-senior went 3-1 overall with three pins, giving him 10 through four events.
   
Freshman Ethan Swope (Luthersburg, Pa./DuBois Area) finished fifth at 133 (2-2). Brandon Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) took sixth place at the 157-pound weight class (3-3). Jimmy Martz (Hookstown, Pa./Southside Beaver) placed sixth among heavyweights (2-3).
   
The Golden Knights will host a dual event against Mercyhurst North East on Wednesday, December 5. The event will be held at the Hammermill Center at 7 p.m.
