At the 1999 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships held in Omaha, Nebraska March 12 & 13, lead by All Americans Todd Proper and Lantz Schwabenbauer, the Gannon University Wrestling Team placed 22nd in the nation for Division II schools.
In the HWT division unseeded Todd Proper opened the Championships with the 2x defending champion, Ryan Resel from South Dakota State. After his first round loss, Todd Pinned All American (1998 4th)Chris Villalobos from Northern Colorado to advance to the consolation quarter finals against Brady Van Vooren of South West State. Todd scored a 14-9 decision over Van Vooren the midwest regional runner up. In the consolation semi finals, Todd was pinned by the #1 seed Jerry Corner from the university of Nebraska at Omaha. In the fifth place match Todd was decisioned by Claude Davis of Central Oklahoma by a score of 16-5. Todd ended his first year of college wrestling with an amazing 27 wins, 6 losses , 11 pins and All American Honors.
At 165 pounds the #3 seed Lantz Schwabenbauer revenged his only Division II loss by defeating Joe Callahan from Chadron State by a score of 5-2. In the quarter finals Lantz lost to 2x All American and eventual runner up Chris Blair from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in an exciting match by a score of 10-7. In the first round of wrestle backs Lantz pounded the Western Regional Champion Mike Bammes from Fort Hayes State 18-6 only to be upset in his next match by Calvin Buhler of Truman State by a 14-10 score. In the match for seventh place, Lantz lost a close match to Joe Callahan by a score of 6-4 to place eighth. Lantz ended his outstanding season with a team high 33 wins, 7 losses, 10 pins and All American Honors. With the addition of Proper and Schwabenbauer, the list of Gannon University Wrestling All Americans has grown to six.
At the 125 pound weight class, the lightest wrestler in the tournament, Bobby Banks weighing in at 115 pounds was tied with the #3 seed Chris Peretti of Ashland when he injured his right arm while attempting a takedown early in the match. With only one good arm, Bobby was unable to defeat his opponent and was sent to the wrestle backs where he ran into All American Eddie Ponce from the University of Southern Colorado. After scoring the first takedown, the injured Banks was eventually pinned in the second period. Bobby ended his season with 26 wins, 10 losses, 3 pins.
Off the wrestling mats at the championships, Gannon University was honored by placing number ten in the All Academic Team Award. The Wrestling Team had a combined GPA of 3.016 for the 10 wrestlers who competed in the Regional Qualifier. Individualy, Derek Maynard was selected to the All Academic Team for the second year in a row with a 3.64 GPA in Chemistry.
Lead by Outstanding Wrestler Lantz Schwabenbauer, three Gannon University Wrestlers qualifed for the NCAA II National Wrestling Championships in Omaha, Nebraska on March 12,13. Joining 165lb Champion Schwabenbauer at the "big dance" are Hwt champion Todd Proper and 125lb R-up Bob Banks.
With the addition of these three, Gannon university has been represented
at the NCAA II Wrestling Championships 16 times since the re-start of the
wrestling program in 1984-85

In the finals Lantz Defeated 3x All American and NCAA II #1 Ranked Troy
Barbush 6-3 to win his second regional crown.
Todd Proper walked through the tournament scoring two decisions to
earn his first trip to nationals.
Senior Bob Banks earned his second trip to the National Tournament
by Defeating NCAA II #4 ranked Brian Burzinski in the semifinals before
losing to the Returning NCAA II Champion Jody Strittmatter in the finals.
Senior wrestlers Eric Witherite and Tom Saito ended their college wrestling
careers by wrestling well. Witherite placed third and Saito lost on a questionable
call in the consi semifinals that might have earned him a trip to nationals.
Junior Chad Jack made it to the semifinals before losing to the eventual
champ and came back to take fourth place.

This ends the dual meet record at 5-7, and begins the post-season at the NCAA East Regional Tournament held at Pitt Johnstown February 26-27, 1999. |
