GANNON WRESTLING TEAM REMAINS
13TH IN LATEST NATIONAL RANKINGS
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon wrestling
team remained 13th in the latest NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association
Top-20 poll released Wednesday afternoon. It marks the second consecutive
poll that the Golden Knights have been ranked 13th.
Minnesota State-Mankato earned its first-ever No. 1 ranking, moving up from
fourth after winning the Cliff Keen/NWCA Division II National Duals. The
Mavericks received 159 of the possible 160 points.
Nebraska-Omaha (153), Central Oklahoma (144), Nebraska-Kearney (136), and
Adams State (Colo.) (123) completed the top five.
Western State (Colo.) (118), Minnesota State-Moorhead (110), Pitt-Johnstown
(109), Upper Iowa (96), and Newberry (S.C.) (84) rounded out the top 10.
Gannon was tabbed 13th with 63 points.
Gannon is 4-2 in dual competition this season. The Golden Knights are coming
off consecutive losses to 10th-ranked Newberry and eighth-ranked Pitt-Johnstown.
Eight Golden Knights have already reached double digits in victories. Kevin
McElhaney (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) leads the way with an 20-9
record and 10 pins at 141. Pino Scavella (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek)
is second on the team with 19 victories in 29 decisions. The senior also
has 11 pins while wrestling at 184 pounds.
Other Golden Knights with double-digit victory totals include Corey Bowers
(133, 16-6), Ethan Swope (133, 11-7), Zack McKendree (149, 14-9), Brandon
Monin (157, 16-8), A.J. Sayles (174, 15-7), and Frank McGrath (Heavyweight,
15-6).
Gannon returns to action Saturday, February 2 at West Liberty State. The
match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
