GANNON
WRESTLING TEAM JUMPS TO
13TH IN LATEST NATIONAL RANKINGS
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon wrestling
team jumped seven spots and is ranked 13th in the latest NCAA Division II
Wrestling Coaches Association Top-20 poll released Wednesday afternoon.
Nebraska-Kearney remained No. 1 with 158 points. Nebraska-Omaha (150), Central
Oklahoma (141), Minnesota State-Mankato (139), and Adams State (Colo.) (128)
completed the top five.
Pitt-Johnstown (124), Upper Iowa (111), Ashland (96), Western State (Colo.)
(95), and Newberry (S.C.) (94) rounded out the top 10. Gannon was tabbed
13th with 58 points.
Gannon is 2-0 in dual competition this season with victories over 16th-ranked
Mercyhurst (24-23) and Mercyhurst-North East (35-9). The Golden Knights are
coming off a fifth-place finish at the Midwest Invitational last weekend.
Eight Golden Knights have already reached double digits in victories. Kevin
McElhaney (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) leads the way with an 18-7
record and 10 pins. The 141-pound sophomore is ranked fifth in the East Region.
Pino Scavella (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) is second on the team with
17 victories in 25 decisions. The senior also has 11 pins while wrestling
at 184 pounds.
Other Golden Knights with double-digit victory totals include Corey Bowers
(133, 14-5), Ethan Swope (133, 10-7), Zack McKendree (149, 13-7), Brandon
Monin (157, 14-6), A.J. Sayles (174, 13-5), and Frank McGrath (Heavyweight,
13-4).
Gannon returns to action Friday, January 11 and Saturday, January 12 at the
Virginia Duals. The Golden Knights wrestle at sixth-ranked Pitt-Johnstown
on Saturday, February 19.
