20TH IN LATEST NATIONAL RANKINGS
GOLDEN KNIGHTS TABBED FIFTH IN EAST REGION
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon wrestling
team is tied for 20th place in the first regular-season NCAA Division II
Wrestling Coaches Association Top 20 poll released Thursday afternoon.
Nebraska-Kearney is the top-ranked team, receiving 158 points. Minnesota
State-Mankato (152), Central Oklahoma (140), Adams State (132), and Pitt-Johnstown
(128) completed the top five.
Upper Iowa (125), Nebraska-Omaha (116), Western State (100), Newberry (86),
and Ashland (85) rounded out the top 10. Gannon received eight points, forging
a tie for 20th place with St. Cloud State.
Gannon is ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division II East regional rankings
released Thursday afternoon. Pitt-Johnstown, Newberry, Mercyhurst, and Limestone
were listed ahead of the Golden Knights.
Seven wrestlers are ranked in their respective weight classes within the
East region. Zack McKendree (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) is the highest-ranked
wrestler, bring tabbed second at 149. The sophomore is 13-5 with five pins.
Brandon Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) is ranked third at 157,
where he is 8-4 with two pins.
Other Gannon wrestlers ranked within the East region include Frank McGrath
(285, 4th, 8-2, 1 pin), Kevin McElhaney (141, 5th, 13-5, 5 pins), Pino Scavella
(184, 5th, 14-5, 10 pins), Corey Bowers (133, 6th, 9-3, 1 pin), and A.J.
Sayles (174, 6th, 11-2, 1 pin).
Gannon (1-0) returns to action Friday, December 14 against 13th-ranked Mercyhurst
at the War At The Shore. The match is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Erie Civic
Center.
