GANNON CONCLUDES NAVY
TOURNAMENT WITH PAIR OF LOSSES
ANNAPOLIS,
Md. - The Gannon men’s water polo team concluded the Naval Academy Tournament
Sunday afternoon with a pair of losses to Division I schools, suffering setbacks
at the hands of Iona (17-9) and Fordham (14-5).
Iona led from start to finish during a 17-9 victory in the opener. The Gaels
led 4-0 after one quarter, 7-3 at halftime, and 12-6 after three quarters.
Paul Musille (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) led the offensive unit with three
goals. Richie DiLoreto (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Greg Naranjo (Coral
Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) added two goals each. Zach Dusckas
(Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Andy Baker (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep)
completed the scoring with one goal apiece.
Darren Stone (Glenwood, Durban, South Africa) made the start in goal,
recording five saves while allowing seven goals in the first two quarters.
Brandon Thomas (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) played the second half,
making six saves and allowing 10 goals.
In the nightcap, Fordham jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one quarter and never
looked back in a 14-5 victory. The Rams led 7-2 at halftime and 10-4 after
three quarters.
DiLoreto and Naranjo tallied two goals each against Fordham. Michael Piper
(Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) chipped in one score. Stone made two saves
and allowed six scores while playing the first half in goal. Thomas turned
away two shots and allowed eight goals in the second half.
Gannon dropped to 1-2 with Sunday’s losses. Iona improved to 2-0 while Fordham
moved its record to 2-2. The Golden Knights return to action September 8-9
at the Princeton Invitational.
