GANNON OPENS MEN'S WATER POLO
SEASON WITH ROUT OF QUEENS (N.Y.)

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men’s water polo team opened the 2007 season in fine fashion Saturday afternoon at the Naval Academy Tournament. Paul Musille (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) tallied five goals as the Golden Knights rolled to a 14-5 victory over Queens (N.Y.). The squad later dropped a 13-4 exhibition match against Navy’s “B” team.

Gannon jumped on Queens early and often in the season opener. The Golden Knights led 4-0 after one quarter, 8-1 at halftime, and 12-4 after three frames.

Musille led the way with five goals. Zack Dusckcas (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Michael Piper (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake), and Pat Mack (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) add two goals each. Dmitriy Simonoff (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson), Stephen Espinet (Port of Spain, Trinidad), and Greg Naranjo (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) completed the scoring with one goal apiece.

Brandon Thomas (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Darren Stone (Glenwood, Durban, South Africa) split time in goal. Thomas made five saves while allowing one goal in the first half. Stone also had five saves while allowing four goals in the second half.

In the exhibition match, Navy bolted to a 7-0 halftime lead and posted a 13-4 victory over the Golden Knights. Musille scored two of the team’s four goals. Espinet and Naranjo added the other goals. Stone (10 saves) and Thomas (six saves) both saw one half of action in front of the net.

Gannon improved to 1-0 after Saturday’s season-opening victory. Queens dropped to 0-1. The Golden Knights conclude play at the Naval Academy Tournament Sunday, September 2 against Iona (10:20 a.m.) and Fordham (1:50 p.m.).
