GANNON FINISHES THIRD AT SMALL
COLLEGE WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Zach Dusckas (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored with 30 seconds left on the game clock for the deciding goal as Gannon out-lasted Washington & Jefferson 8-7 Sunday afternoon in the third-place match of the 2007 Division II/III Small College Men’s Water Polo Championships hosted by MIT.

Gannon finished second at the Division II Eastern Championships Saturday evening while Washington & Jefferson placed second at the Division III Eastern Championships.

Leading 7-5 at the end of the third period, Gannon saw its lead cut to one less than three minutes into the fourth period as W&J’s Andrew Whittam converted an exclusion chance to pull the Presidents to within 7-6. The teams traded possessions from there until Dusckas scored on an exclusion to increase the advantage to 8-6.

The goal appeared to be an insurance score until W&J’s Joe Hamilton ripped a blast from the wing which eluded Gannon goalie Brandon Thomas (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) to bring the Presidents within 8-7. However, Gannon passed the ball around the pool to run out the clock and secure the victory.

The match was tight throughout as Gannon jumped out to a 2-0 lead before W&J tallied three consecutive goals for a 3-2 lead after one quarter. The Golden Knights built a 5-3 lead at halftime and led 6-4 with 4:11 left in the third period, before the dramatic conclusion.

Paul Musille (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) led the scoring attack with four goals. Dusckas, Dmitriy Simonoff (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson), Richie DiLoreto (Erie, Pa./McDowell), and Stephen Espinet (Port of Spain, Trinidad/Maple Leaf) tallied one goal each. Thomas turned away 11 shots in goal.

Thomas and Musille were named to the all-tournament first team. Dusckas, Simonoff, DiLoreto, and Espinet were accorded all-tournament second-team accolades.

Gannon improved to 11-7 overall with Sunday’s victory. Washington & Jefferson dropped to 7-12 overall and 0-3 against Gannon this season. The Golden Knights return to action November 3-4 at the CWPA Southern Division Championships hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy.
