GANNON WATER POLO TEAM SPLITS
PAIR OF LOCAL ROAD MATCHES

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men’s water polo team found the waters a little rough Saturday evening as the Golden Knights split a pair of local road matches. Gannon opened the action with an 11-10 overtime victory at Penn State Behrend, before dropping a 16-9 decision at Mercyhurst.

Gannon and Penn State Behrend were in a nip-and-tuck affair throughout their contest. The Golden Knights led 2-1 after one quarter, but the Lions battled back to tie the match at four heading into halftime.

Gannon regained the lead 7-5 after three quarters, but Penn State Behrend rallied again to send the match into overtime tied at nine. The Golden Knights then out-scored the Lions 2-1 in the overtime session.

Richie DiLoreto (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the offensive unit with five goals. Zach Dusckas (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Greg Naranjo (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) chipped in two goals each.

Dmitriy Simonoff (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) and Paul Musille (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) completed the scoring with one goal apiece. Brandon Thomas (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) made 11 saves in goal.

In the nightcap, Mercyhurst out-scored Gannon 4-2 in each of the first two quarters for an 8-4 halftime advantage. The Golden Knights cut the deficit to 9-7 after three frames, but the Lakers iced the game with a 7-2 advantage in the final quarter.

Dusckas and Naranjo led the way with two goals. Simonoff, Musille, DiLoreto, John Krakowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), and Michael Piper (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) added one score each. Darren Stone (Glenwood, Durban, South Africa) recorded 10 saves while allowing 11 goals. Thomas made two saves and allowed five goals in relief.

Gannon moved its record to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the CWPA with Saturday’s split. Penn State Behrend dropped to 3-13 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Mercyhurst improved to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the CWPA. The Golden Knights return to action Saturday, October 13 at Washington & Jefferson. The CWPA match is scheduled for noon.
