GANNON CONCLUDES SEASON WITH
LOSS AT NO. 1 NORTHERN KENTUCKY

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Gannon men's soccer team's first trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament did not end the way it had visioned. Northern Kentucky, the NCAA Division II top-ranked team, exploded with four first-half goals and rolled to a 5-2 victory over the Golden Knights Friday evening in a NCAA Tournament first round match.

The first half was filled with offensive fireworks. Unfortunately for Gannon, NKU set off most of the explosives. The Norse tallied the first goal in the 10th minute on Tony Capurro's third goal of the season.

Gannon wasted little time to tie the contest at one, scoring 3:55 later. John Connelly (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) tied the match from 16 yards out inside the left post from the right side, off a pass from Geneo Oberst (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward).

The hosts then turned on the offensive jets, talling three goals over the final 27:41 of the first half and went to halftime with a 4-1 advantage. The Norse extended the lead to 5-1 on Braden Bishop's second goal of the match 4:55 into the second half.

Chad Wynter (Mississauga, Ontario/John Cabot Catholic) completed the scoring in the 76th minute, finshing a play from Tomas Latocha (St. Catharines, Ontario/St. Francis Secondary) and Dan Howell (Erie, Pa./Iroquois).

Northern Kentucky out-shot Gannon 21-12, including a 16-5 onslaught in the first 45 minutes. The Norse held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Steven Boehmer (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) recorded five saves in the loss.

Gannon concluded its season at 16-3-1. Only three teams in school history have won more than 16 matches in a season. Northern Kentucky improved to 21-1 and will host SIU Edwardsville in Sunday's (November 11) Great Lakes Regional title match at 1 p.m.
