GANNON RECEIVES FIRST NCAA MEN'S
SOCCER TOURNAMENT BID SINCE 1993

GOLDEN KNIGHTS TO FACE NATION'S NO. 1 TEAM IN OPENING ROUND

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men’s soccer team has made it to the Big Dance for the first time since 1993. The Golden Knights received a bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament Monday afternoon and will head into the Great Lakes Regional as the No. 4 seed.

Northern Kentucky (20-1) will serve as the host school and the Great Lakes region’s top seed. The Norse are ranked No. 1 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25. NKU was the only undefeated team in NCAA Division II until suffering a 1-0 loss to Lewis (Ill.) in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Championship Match last Sunday.

Gannon (16-2-1) will face Northern Kentucky Friday, November 9 in the opening round at 7:30 p.m. Second-seed Lewis (Ill.) (17-4) will battle third-seed SIU Edwardsville (10-3-3) in the opening match at 5 p.m. The winners will then play Sunday, November 11 for the Great Lakes Regional Championship and a spot in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. Game time for Sunday’s regional championship match has yet to be announced.

Gannon rides a seven-match unbeaten streak into the NCAA Tournament, culminating with last weekend’s GLIAC Championship run. The Golden Knights won the inaugural GLIAC post-season title with victories over Mercyhurst (3-2 in ot) and Northwood (2-0).

The post-season bid is Gannon’s eighth all-time and first since 1993. The Golden Knights made all seven previous NCAA Tournament appearances between 1984 and 1993, producing a 5-7 tournament record.

Gannon is 4-2 all-time against Northern Kentucky. The Golden Knights last played the Norse in 2005, dropping a 1-0 decision in Highland Heights, Kentucky. The squad earned a 2-1 victory over the Norse at home in 2004.

Only three teams in school history have posted more victories in a single season than this year’s squad. Gannon brings a 16-2-1 record into the NCAA Tournament. Only the 1985 team (20-1), 1989 squad (18-3-1), and 1983 team (17-3) captured more victories in a season.
