Tom Simmons enters his fifth
season as the Gannon head men’s golf coach. During his tenure at Gannon,
Simmons also served in a dual role as the head women’s golf coach for two
seasons in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
Simmons is a familiar name to the Erie golf community. Prior to his arrival,
the Gannon alumnus spent the previous four and one-half seasons as the men’s
and women’s golf coach at Mercyhurst College.
After graduating from Cathedral Prep High School, Simmons lettered in golf
at Division I Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1964-65. He transferred
to Gannon the following year where he played for two years under Bud Elwell.
He has been an EDGA match play quarterfinalist (1984 & 1991) and match
play semifinalist (1992). He set the amateur course record at Riverside Golf
Course (64) in 1991.
Among his accolades are nine club championships. He captured the Riverside
Golf Course Club Championship five consecutive years from 1991-95. Simmons
added the Culbertson Hills Golf Course Club championship to his resume in
1994. He has won the Elk Valley Golf Course Senior Club Championship in 1997,
1998 and 2001. Simmons also is a former secretary on the board of directors
of the Greater Erie Charity Golf Classic.
Simmons previously coached the Mercyhurst men’s and women's golf programs
from 1998-2003. He started the women’s golf program from scratch and solidified
it as Mercyhurst’s 10th women’s varsity sport at the time.
