GANNON'S WARD NAMED
ARTHUR ASHE SPORTS SCHOLAR

ERIE, Pa. - Gannon’s Matt Ward (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) has been named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar announced in the May 29 issue of Diverse Magazine: Issues In Higher Education.

Ward was named to the football second team, being one of 29 student-athletes in the entire country selected to either the first or second team. The teams consisted of Division I, II, and III student-athletes.

Diverse: Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination.

Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.’s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, every college and university in the country are invited to participate in the annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability, Arther Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism.

To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.

Ward has been among the best in the classroom and on the football field. The junior owns a 3.36 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in History. He had a 3.00 GPA during the 2007 fall semester.

On the field, Ward recorded 34 tackles in eight games. The defensive lineman recorded 4.5 tackles for a loss (21 yards) and three sacks (17 yards).

Ward, one of two team captains in 2007, has 95 career tackles in three seasons. He has seven sacks and 13 tackles for a loss in 30 career contests. The Brockport, N.Y., native has been a GLIAC All-Academic selection every season
