GANNON SET TO BEGIN SPRING
FOOTBALL CAMP TUESDAY NIGHT

ERIE, Pa. - The recent weather in the Erie, Pa., area has been extremely cold, so the Gannon football team should be right at home as it opens spring camp Tuesday, March 25 at Gannon University Field.

Second-year head coach Jim Kiernan will direct his troops through the first of 15 spring practices Tuesday evening at Gannon University Field. “This spring should be a great building block in regards to our move to the PSAC this fall,” said Kiernan. “With a lot of our starters back, we expect to see a dramatic improvement in our timing and execution.

“Spring is also a great opportunity for the players who redshirted or were injured last season to get a chance to show what they can do.”

Sixty-two players will participate in the four-week session of spring ball, which concludes Friday, April 11 with the Spring Game at 7 p.m.

“Our goals are not much different than any other spring,” noted Kiernan. “We want to improve our fundamentals and keep everyone healthy. Our two main objectives with the offensive unit is to take care of the ball better and improve our passing attack. Defensively, our main goal is to become better tacklers.”

Gannon returns 47 letterwinners and 26 players who started multiple games last season. Offensively, the Golden Knights lose only three players who started at least six games. Both starting quarterbacks (Bob Bartley and Zach Boedicker) and both starting tailbacks (Jarrett Beavers and Jon Richardson) return.

Defensively, Gannon brings back every starter with the exception of linebacker Alton Kenner and defensive back Dom Wiggins. Five of the squad’s top six tacklers from a year ago will put the Maroon and Gold back on in 2008.

“Everyone in our program has worked very hard during the off-season to insure we make improvements,” said Kiernan. “I know the players and coaches are excited to get back on the field.”

Gannon tentatively opens the 2008 season Saturday, August 30 at Lake Erie. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Golden Knights begin their initial campaign in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Saturday, September 6 at East Stroudsburg.
