GANNON MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM
FALLS TO 18TH IN FINAL DIVISION II POLL
ERIE, Pa. - The
Gannon men’s basketball team dropped 11 spots and is ranked 18th in the final
National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/Division II Top 25 Poll
released Monday evening.
Bentley (Mass.) (30-0) and Grand Valley State (33-0) were tabbed co-No. 1
teams heading into the NCAA Tournament. It marks the first time that the
No. 1 spot has been shared in the final ranking of a season. Bentley and
Grand Valley State are the only undefeated teams in NCAA Division II. Both
programs received four first-place votes and 196 points.
Winona State (Minn.) (32-1), Alaska-Anchorage (25-5), and Northern State
(S.D.) (27-3) complete the top five. South Carolina Aiken (27-3), Findlay
(26-4), Benedict (S.C.) (26-4), California (Pa.) (25-5), and Augusta State
(Ga.) (22-6) round out the top 10. Gannon is tabbed 18th with 67 points,
40 out of the top 10.
Four nationally-ranked teams will play in this weekend’s NCAA Division II
Great Lakes Regional hosted by Grand Valley State. Two will square off in
the first round.
No. 11 Drury (Mo.) and No. 18 Gannon lock horns in Saturday’s (March 15)
opening round at 2:30 p.m. The Panthers are 25-5 after winning the Great
Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Championship last weekend. The Golden Knights
bring a 26-4 record into the match-up. The contest, as well as all Gannon
games played at the NCAA Tournament, can be heard live on Jet Radio 1400
and via the Internet at http://www.gannon.edu/sports/werg/knightsound.ihtml.
Chris Hughes will call the play-by-play.
In addition to top-ranked Grand Valley State, No. 7 Findlay will also participate
in the regional.
The Golden Knights are one of four teams in school history to record 25 victories
in a season. Only the 1986-87 team that played in the NCAA Division II National
Title Game won more games with a 28-6 record.
Gannon will be making its 21st NCAA Tournament appearance and first since
2005. The Golden Knights’ last tournament victory came in 1995 with an 82-81
victory over Bloomsburg at the Hammermill Center.
