GANNON SUBDUES PERENNIAL GLIAC
POWER MICHIGAN TECH 75-65
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men’s basketball team has shown the ability
to be successful against a zone defense this season. For the second consecutive
game, the Golden Knights faced a zone defense for the majority of the contest
Saturday afternoon at the Hammermill Center. For the second consecutive game,
the Gannon guards shot over that zone and propelled the Golden Knights to
a 75-65 victory over visiting Michigan Tech.
Gannon led the entire first half, owning its biggest lead at 24-14 before
heading to halftime with a 31-28 advantage. The Golden Knights extended their
lead to 43-34 with 13:43 to play on Kyle Goldcamp’s (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central
Catholic) lay-up.
Tech rallied with a 10-0 run over the next 3:32 to grab a 44-43 lead with
10:12 remaining. Kevin Maloney started the spurt with back-to-back three-pointers.
That’s when the Gannon shooters blasted the zone defense from the outside.
Robert Buckner (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) scored his first points of
the night with a triple at the 9:27 mark, giving the Golden Knights the lead
back at 46-44.
With the game tied at 51, Buckner nailed another three-pointer from the right
wing. Joe Lindsey (Spring Valley, N.Y./Spring Valley) then hit a three-pointer
52 seconds later for his first points of the game, giving the Golden Knights
a 57-53 edge with 5:24 left in the game. Buckner iced the game with his third
triple of the second half with 1:59 showing on the clock. The shot pushed
the Gannon lead to 68-60 and the Golden Knights coasted to the 10-point victory.
Four players reached double digits in scoring for the fifth consecutive game.
Vince Mosley (Boynton Beach, Fla./Dillard) was Gannon’s leading scorer
for the fourth time in five games with 18 points. He also recorded eight
rebounds and four assists.
Goldcamp finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, hitting 7-of-9 shots
from the field. Buckner and Lindsey added 10 points each.
Gannon shot 49.1 percent (27-55) from the field during a game that was mostly
part in the half-court. The two teams combined for only eight fast-break
points. The Golden Knights shot 57.1 percent (8-14) from three-point range
and 68.4 percent (13-19) from the free throw line.
Tim Strom led Michigan Tech with 16 points and nine rebounds. Maloney chipped
in 15 points off the bench.
Michigan Tech shot 43.6 percent (24-55) from the floor, 42.1 percent (8-19)
from behind the arc, and 81.8 percent (9-11) from the charity stripe.
Gannon remained undefeated at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC with Saturday’s
victory. Michigan Tech dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Golden Knights return to action Thursday, December 6 at Lake Superior
State. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
