Former Knights In The Pros
Former Golden Knights In The Pros
Sixteen members of the Gannon
University basketball family have advanced to the professional level. Cal
Graham and Jim Harding were the pioneers, both involved with the Pittsburgh
Pipers of the American Basketball Association. Harding, the Golden Knight
head coach from 1963-67, served as head coach of the Pipers, while Graham
was a member of the Pipers after playing at Gannon from 1965-67.
Former assistant coach Bill Kalbaugh, a Gannon aide in 1989-90, also coached
professionally, guiding the Erie Wave of the World Basketball League. Two
former Knights remained in Erie and suited up for the Wave, Chris Hollan in
1990 and Darryl Freeman in 1991.
Golden Knights who have recently excelled at the professional level in Europe
include Tony Lyons (1998-99), Steve Moyer (1995-99), Troy Nesmith (1997-98),
and Zaid Al-Khas (1999-00). Nesmith also had a couple stints in the International
Basketball League in the United States.
David Morris (1985-88) and Mo Jamison (1987-88) both played professional
ball in Portugal. Morris played from 1988-91 while Jamison played during the
1986-87 and ‘87-88 seasons. Dave Stoczynski (1971-73) saw time in Spain and
France. Gerald Walker (1971-74) played in Europe for two years after scoring
the second-most points ever at Gannon. John Bowen (1987-88) was a member
of the Washington Generals, the Harlem Globetrotters’ travel team.
Javar Cheatham (2000-01) played one season as a professional in 2002 for
the Dodge City Legend of the United States Basketball League (USBL). Most
recently, Geoff Husted played with Dakota in the NBA’s Developmental League.
He was named to the 2006-07 CBA All-Rookie team, and has played in Portugal
and Australia since his Gannon playing days.
