Active- A person who has been intiated into a lifelong membership of a Greek organization, an undergraduate member
Alumni/Alumnae- A person who is no longer an undergraduate memeber of a Greek organization because they have graduated college
Bid- An invitation to join a fraternity
Chapter- The order of a national organization's intiation. Each organization follows a Greek Letter order: for example, the first chapter is the "Alpha Chater" the next is the "Beta Chapter," A collegaite chapter of an organization
Depledge- The termination of a pledge's affilation with a Greek oranization. Depledging still requires that the ex-new member respects the traditions of the fraternity or sorority by retaining all secret activities
Dry Rush- Alcohol is forbidden at any rush function
Event- A scheduled program during the new membering process
Formal Recruitment- The structured recruitment process in the spring semester
Greek- A name associated with a member of a Greek Letter organization
Informal Rush- The semi-structured recruitment process in the fall
Initiation- A formal ceremony that intiates new members into full, active membership
Interfraternity Council (IFC)- Governing body of fraternities at Gannon
Invitation- A request by a sorority to go to the next round or process of new memebering
Legacy- A student participation in the membership process whose parent, grandparent, brother, or sister is an alumni memeber of a Greek Organization on campus.
New Member- A student participating in the membership process of a fraternity or sorority, also called associate members and formally known as a pledge
Panhellenic (NPC)- A national governing body over twenty-six sororities, and over five sororities at Gannon
Pan-hellenic- A national governing body of sororities and fraternities that are historically African-American, governs over Alpha Kappa Alpha
Rushee- A non-member of a Greek organization that is eligible to visit, rush, and become a new memeber of a fraternity or sorority
Quota- A total number of new members a sorority can have join
Total- The largest a sorority can be at Gannon
Studies indicate that Greek Students are more likely to remain in college and receive a degree than students who are not affiliated with a sorority or a fraternity.

More than 7 million men and women in the U.S. and Canada are Greek.

80% of CEOs of the 500 largest corporations were Greek.

Fraternity and Sorority members comprise more than three-fourths of Congress.

Seven out of ten people listed in "Who's Who in America" are Greek.

A total of 85% of Supreme court Justices since the 1900's have been Greek.

Since 1900, two-thirds of members of Presidential Cabinets have been Greek.

Of the past fifteen presidents who had a chance to join a fraternity, twelve of them took advantage of the opportunity to become Greek.

On average, the all-sorority grade point average (GPA) is consistently higher than the all-campus GPA.

The first female senator and astronaut were both sorority women.

Fraternity and sorority members are more likely to graduate from college than those who are not.

Greek Members have been found to be more successful financially as well as give more to their alma maters.

Students that are Greek participate in more extra curricular activities than those students who are not Greek.
 

You don't have to be "rich" to join a sorority. Many sorority women hold jobs, receive financial aid or earn in-chapter scholarships.

Sororities are not just about being social. Sororities offer racial awareness, cultural education, and health worker programs. Each sorority is responsible through their national organizations for providing, at the least, a monthly programs on issues such as alcohol abuse, eating disorders, date rape and more.

Sorority members do have lives outside of their groups. Many participate in other activities like cheerleading, swimming, diving, water polo, lacrosse, band, DJing, the student newspaper, tutoring, SGA, APB, and more!

Sorority members do a lot of the community. Each group has a national philanthropy that they raise money for. Sororities donate thousands of hours and have donated thousands of dollars to their community and campus.

Sororities encourage their members to get involved in a variety of campus activities to enhance their college experience and expand their number of friendships.

Sorority does not only involve social activities. Most sororities do partake in formals and mixers but academics comes first. There are a lot of other aspects to sorority life.

Sororities do not encourage the consuption of alcohol. It is discouraged and banned from all sorority houses.

Sorority women are concerned about social issues and demonstrate this concern through their participation in events such as the Breast Cancer Awareness, Take Back the Night, Alcohol Awareness, and more.
