What is Rush?

Recruitment is a time for you to meet the members of Gannon's Greek Community. It is a period of carefully planned and scheduled activities during which you will have the opportunity to visit every sorority at Gannon. You will have the opportunity to meet many members from each chapter you will tell you about the many advantages of Greek life and what the Greek experience meant to them.

As a potential new member, you should remember that sorority life offers you the opportunity to grow and develop, but keep an open mind during recruitment.

Sorority Rush is the mutual selection process for joining a Greek organization. Through participating in the various Recruitment activities, you will be able to discover the chapter that best suits you. During these activities, you will be able to discover the chapter that best suits you. During these activities, you will meet the "sisters" of each chapter, learn about each group, and their activities and traditions. Be careful in selecting the group you want to belong to. As a new member, you should seek to join the organization that you will benefit from and contribute to most easily. It should be clear that there is no such thing as the "best sorority on campus." Every potential new member will have their own "best chapter" that represents their own individual interests and needs. Do not let your friends or your families influence your decision, if you do not think its right for you.

Remember that the new member period can be hectic, but it is definitely worth it! Make sure that you allow plenty of time for studying before the activities-- scholarship is very important to each organization! Also, allow time before each activity to eat dinner, get ready, or just relax! The first steps in becoming a member of a growing Greek system is to attend Meet the Sororities and registering for recruitment.

The Right way to Rush!

Be Yourself. There is nothing more important than being yourself during rush. You'll end up with the right organization for YOU!!!
Evaluate each chapter carefully. It is important to make an individual decision about which chapter you will focus on during Rush. Don't make decisions based on your friend's, roommate's, or family's wishes!
Take your time! Joining a chapter is an important decision. Be sure that the chapter that has given you a big is the one you will be happy with. You do not have to accept a bid right away. This is not a decision that you want to rush into.
Visit as many chapters as you can! Only you can decide what group is right for you.
Beware. Look out for chapters who belittle or make derogatory remarks about other groups.
Dry Rush. Alcohol is not allowed at any recruitment function. Violation of this rule is a serious infraction and chapter may face severe disciplinary action.
Ask Questions. Make sure that all of your questions are sufficiently answered. Some useful questions might be:
    What makes this chapter unique?
What is the new member program like?
What will be expected of me as a new member?
How much does joining a chapter cost?
What kind of emphasis does the chapter put into scholarship, community service, leadership, and sisterhood?
The fall rush option. If Greek like is not an option for you in the spring, there is next semester!
Have fun! Be positive, smile, and enjoy!
Financial Information

The financial obligations of joining a sorority are important considerations for each potential new member, and the cost of membership varies with each chapter. It is essential that each member take responsibility in regards to her commitment to a particular sorority.

Money associated with Greek like is not meant to BUY YOUR FRIENDS, as many opponents suggest. In considering the financial aspects of joining a Greek organization, it is important to remember that membership is a lifestyle that cannot be compared to other clubs or groups at Gannon. In MANY chapters, it is possible to arrange payment plans, so ask if you have questions regarding financial obligations.

The first year of member in a Greek organization is most expensive because of the one-time fees every new initiate must pay. Fees may include, but not limited to:
Pledging/New Member Fee-
This fee pays for new member manuals, notebooks, materials, pledge pins, and national dues.
The Initiation Fee-
This fee includes subscription to the national magazine, lifetime membership, process of membership, process of membership, and the initiation ceremony.
Chapter Dues-
Part of these fees that each member pays goes into budgets that are used for expenses such as Recruitment, social functions, service projects, special events, and other financial situations that are needed to run a chapter.

Leadership

Membership in a Greek Organization provides an excellent place to gain the experience and knowledge which is necessary for successful leadership. As a student, you will have many opportunities to become involved with different organizations. Through your involvement, you will find that many sorority members are the driving force in student government and also hold positions in honorary societies, campus organizations and athletics.

Your college career will involve more than textbooks, classrooms, athletics, and social functions. As a Greek you will have the opportunity to serve your chapter as an officer or committee member developing skills in organization, communication, and decision making. Through membership you can develop leadership potential at Gannon and the rest of your life.

Scholarship

The primary reason for attending college is to receive a sound education and academic achievement is a foundation of Greek Life. Gannon's Greek organizations have a strong tradition of high academic standards that promote education through its own scholarship programs, educational resources and study hours. Sororities devote many hours to helping their members achieve academic excellence, and require all members to maintain a minimum of at least a 2.0 in most chapters to remain in good standing.

At Gannon we recognize the advantages of a well rounded education, and realize that scholarship is the foundation of a strong chapter. By being part of a sorority, you would be part of a community build on high academic standards. Many national organizations were founded to support the scholastic endeavors of college students and strong academic performance. Each year, national organizations continue to encourage alumni groups, foundations, and academic honorary societies to financially support Greek affiliated students with scholarships, grants, low interest loans, and other academic resources. Academic success is simply opportunity meeting hard work, and Greek life at Gannon is that opportunity. The Greek women at Gannon usually have a higher female GPA as well as a higher overall GPA on campus.
