Course Description: Overview of
Family Law and Procedure, with emphasis on practical applications.
Textbooks: Family Law 5thEdition, WilliamP. Statsky,West PublishingCompany, 2002
Special Assignments: Legal research and preparation of pleadings and memoranda
Examinations: Three exams, each after approximately eight classes
Objectives: The instructor's objective is to impart to the students a working
knowledge of the basic concepts of Family Law. At the conclusion of the course,
the student should be able to recognize a particular family law problem, to
interpret the appropriate solutions of the problem and then accomplish a result
satisfactory to the client. The course is not specifically designed to enhance
writing or communication skills, but a student should recognize that personal
communication with a client is a unique requirement in a family law practice,
and the student should come to understand a realization of the emotional as well
as legal needs of the client.
