Doherty experience
During the Spring, 1998, semester Maureen Doherty, a senior IB major
from Gulf Shores, AL, studied abroad at American College Dublin, Ireland,
which she arranged through its US sister school, Lynn University.
Doherty discovered this opportunity on the Internet. More information
on American College Dublin can be found at: http://www.cybervillage.com/acdireland/;
and for more information on Lynn see: http://www.cybervillage.com/acdireland/.
Doherty has been awarded 15 credit hours at Gannon for courses that
were taken, which included Irish Commerce Study Tour, International
Marketing and Trade Relations, Sino/ Russia History, Corporate Finance,
and Modern Novel.
Martini experience
During the Summer, 1996, Giancarlo Martini, an IB major and Erie resident,
spent six weeks in Costa Rica. For five of those weeks he participated
in an intensive Spanish course at the Spanish Language Institute in San
Francisco de Dos Rios near San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica.
In order to enhance his exposure to the language and culture during his
stay, Martini lived with a Costa Rican family. While in Costa Rica,
Martini also performed an International Business independent internship
with Consorcio Colon International, a consortium involved in tourism (resorts,
charter boat service) and technology (biotechnology and Internet), and
ICT, a government tourism association.
Martini was the recipient of a $300 study abroad grant from Gannon.
Martini arranged this Study Abroad through the SUNY College at Brockport.
As a result of his experience he received Gannon credit for six credit
hours of upper level Spanish as well as three credit hours for the International
Business independent internship.
Since his graduation in Spring, 1998, Martini, has been studying and
working in Costa Rico. Martini has been accepted into the Masters
in International Business program at Clemson for Fall, 1998.
Valentine experience
As an example of the opportunities that an IB minor presents, consider
the experience of Dan Valentine, a Political Science major, IB minor, from
Oil City, Pa. During the Spring and Summer, 1997, when he was a senior,
he spent over five months in Europe. In the Spring he studied at
Franklin College in Lugano, Switzerland, where he was enrolled in four
courses, some of which were used to partially satisfy his IB minor requirement.
Following his studies at Franklin College, he performed a Political Science
internship at the Institute of European Affairs in Dublin, Ireland.
While in Europe he visited eleven countries and over 40 major cities. Valentine
states that he came back a changed person as being abroad made him
realize that there is so much of the world that most people will never
see. A report on his experience is contained in the October 1, 1997,
Gannon Knight.
To expand upon his knowledge of international business obtained from
his European experience, and the international financial system, in particular,
upon his return to the country, later that summer, Valentine performed
an International Business independent internship at Wheat First Butcher
Singer in Oil City, Pa. Some of his responsibilities involved financial
analyses of foreign companies. Valentine believes that this internship,
which was also used to partially satisfy his IB minor requirement, will
benefit him in the future since he plans to focus on international law
in law school, at which time he plans to study abroad again for a semester.
Tines experience
Alex Tines, a senior IB major and a member of the Gannon men’s basketball
team, plans to study abroad in summer, 1998, at Instituto de Lenguaje
"Pura Vida," in Heridia, Costa Rica, which is located 11 kilometers from
the City of San Jose at the foot of the central volcanic mountain range
and is quite possibly the most tranquil and beautiful place in all of the
Central Valley.
He is to enroll in a four week immersion course for advanced Spanish
speakers which will involve seven hours/day of instruction, including language
lessons and afternoon cultural activities, such as trips to the market
place and museums, dance classes, Costa Rican cooking classes, music classes,
and barbecues. During his five weeks there he is to stay with a Costa
Rican family who speak no English which will allow him to practice what
was learned in class and directly experience the customs and culture of
Costa Ricans
Tines made this arrangement directly with the Costa Rican school.
Yaw Asante
Yaw Asante, a Spring, 1998, graduate from Ghana, Africa, and president
of the Gannon International Students Association, has been accepted at,
and is planning to attend, Thunderbird - the American Graduate School of
International Management, the premier IB graduate school in the US.
Another IB student is interested in attending this same institution upon
his graduation. Asante was graduated with a double major in IB and
Business Administration and a minor in Human Resource Management.
