Cable TV FAQ:
    Q:  I only get 13 channels, why?
A:   You need to change your TV from antenna to cable in the menu.   Then run your autoprogram.

    Q:  The channels are fuzzy.
A:  Several things could be affecting the signal.  Weather can cause fuzziness.  Also, the local stations are picked up using antennas and not satellite.  If the problem persists contact the helpdesk(x7501) as there may be a real problem.

Data Network FAQ:
    Q:  What is GUConnect?
A:  GUConnect is the catch-all word for the collection of technology resources provided to the students living in the dorms.   This includes cable TV, Data networking, and phones.

Q:  What kind of computer should I buy?
A:  Check Gannon's recommended computer page.   Gannon has an agreement with DELL for all of Gannon's computer purchases.  Because of this students can get a discount on DELL computers.

Q:  What Operating System does Gannon Recommend?
A:  Gannon recommends Windows XP Pro.  If you wish to use another Operating System you may, but I.T.S. may only provide limited support, if any.  You MAY NOT run any server software.

Q:  How do I know if I have a network card?
A:  Check this page for help on figuring out if you have a network interface card.   If you don't have a card you can purchase one at almost any story that sells computer parts.   Check Gannon's recommended network card page for suggestions.

Q:  Does Gannon install network cards for students?
A:  Sorry, Gannon does not install network cards. You must install it yourself or have someone else install it.   If you call the helpdesk (x7501) we can get you the name and number for someone that can help you.

Q:  Does Gannon install any hardware or software for students?
A:  Sorry, due to problems with liability we can not install any hardware or software for students.   We can however help you find someone who can install it for you. Give the helpdesk (x7501) a call.

Q:  What kind of cable do I need to use the internet connection in the dorm room?
A:  You need an Ethernet cable.   It needs to have rj-45 connectors on both ends and it must meet category 5 specification.   A phone cable will not work.    You should be able to buy an ethernet cable at any store that sells computer supplies.  The Gannon Bookstore does sell the proper ethernet cables.

Q:  Which DATA jacks are activated in my apartment?
A:  The jacks are in the bedroom on the bottom left and right.  If the jack you try first doesn't seem to work try one of the other jacks.  If you have tried all the jacks and you still can't get it to work give the helpdesk (x7501) a call.

Q:  I can't connect to the internet, why not?
A:  There are many reasons you might not be able to connect. First you need to have a network card and an ethernet cable.   Check to make sure you are using a rj-45 cable (it has 8 wires, a phone cord only has 4 wires). If you've done all this and it still doesn't work contact the helpdesk(x7501).

Q:  When I try to connect to the internet Windows wants to use my modem and not my network card.  Why?
A:  What's happening is at some point you were using your modem to connect to the internet and now your computer still wants to do that.  You can fix this by going to this page and following the intructions.

Q:  I have Windows XP.  How do I map a network drive?
A:  You can either go to http://www.gannon.edu/remoteaccess or instructions for mapping a network drive using Windows XP can be found HERE.

A:  Gannon provides Symantec Anti-Virus software to ALL students!  It is required to access the network.
