Gannon University believes compassionate people can make a difference in individuals’ lives and better the community in which they live. If you are interested in working with crisis intervention, youth and mental health counseling, probation, employee assistance, child welfare, drug and alcohol counseling, family therapy or developmental disabled care management, Gannon’s social work program can give you the background you need. As a social work major, you will receive individualized instruction and be prepared to work with culturally diverse populations through participation in academic and social activities that promote and enhance the dignity, individuality and self-determination of all persons.
The field of social and human services is ranked among the top ten fastest growing occupations. Professional opportunities for social workers are anticipated to grow at a rate of over 36 percent in the coming years. Settings for social workers can be found in schools, hospitals and nursing homes. Social work majors also have the option of continuing their education in graduate school before entering the work force.
The Erie area provides opportunities for field experience with agencies such as Hamot Medical Center, Millcreek Community Hospital, Erie Homes for Children and Adults, Hermitage House and many more.
Gannon social work students are active members of the Social Work Club. Gannon’s Social Work Club organizes Erie county’s largest Christmas dinner for the homeless. Students in the club also participate in various community activities, including the American Heart Association’s “Heart Walk” and “Project Give.”
