What You'll Be Doing

Gannon University believes sports enthusiasts can be more than just fans. Recent estimates suggest the sporting industry is a $200 billion per year business and growing. By offering a strong core of general business education and specific knowledge of the discipline of sports, Gannon’s sports management and marketing program can help you turn your love for sports into a career.

The sporting industry is twice as large as the auto industry and one of the top ten industries in the world. For example, it is estimated that television rights for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (March Madness) are valued at approximately $510 million and television rights for the NFL are over $2 billion. Possible career paths graduates of the sports management and marketing program include, but are not limited to: professional teams, professional services, national and local associations, media, college athletics, facilities and event management, recreation, retail and more.

 

College Connections

Sports management and marketing is housed in The Gannon University Dahlkemper School of Business Administration. Students in the program interact with students and professors in the fields of advertising communications, business administration, finance, international business, management, marketing, risk management and insurance.

The Dahlkemper School of Business Administration at Gannon has received accreditation from the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), making Gannon the first business school in northwestern Pennsylvania with both undergraduate and graduate programs that are nationally accredited.

All Gannon business students have the opportunity to participate in many professional business organizations, including: the Gannon Accounting Club, Student Investment Trust, Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, Gannon Student Advertising Club, Delta Mu Delta Honorary Business Fraternity and Marketing Club.

The Small Business Development Center on Gannon’s campus provides students with a unique opportunity to work on projects and assignments for area businesses through classes and internships.

 

Admission Requirements

The minimum requirements to be considered for acceptance to the Sports Management and Marketing program include:

  • Overall high school grade point average of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.
  • SAT score or 950 (out of 1600 Math and Critical Reading) or better or an ACT composite score of 20 or better.

Major Facts

    • During their senior year, sports management and marketing students participate in an internship with recreational sports organizations such as professional sports organizations both within northwestern Pennsylvania and the nearby metropolitan areas (Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh).

    • Academic and merit scholarships for sports management and marketing majors are available through the Business Excellence Awards.

    • The sports management and marketing program was designed according to the guidelines of the North American Society for Sports Management, and it is the goal of the program to pursue accreditation within five years of its inception (Fall 2011).

    • Juniors at Gannon may choose to pursue an accelerated MBA program and complete both their undergraduate and graduate degrees in just five years, rather than six.

    • Throughout students’ academic experience at Gannon, they can participate in a variety of service learning opportunities.
