What You'll Be Doing

Gannon University believes in the power of a mathematics degree. A bachelor’s degree in mathematics opens a multitude of doors. Its flexibility allows students to follow any path they choose—as actuaries, teachers, mathematicians, engineers, architects, writers/publishers, financial and systems analysts, economists, project managers, lawyers, physical therapists or medical doctors. Whichever possibilities you wish to pursue, a degree in mathematics from Gannon University can help you explore your options and achieve your goals.

Mathematics provides a common framework for understanding concepts in many fields. Most importantly, you learn to think logically, which is a desirable skill for every career and for life itself. Many mathematicians choose to go into industries such as insurance, computer programming, industrial research and development, economics and finance.

Secondary Education Certificate

In addition to receiving a mathematics degree, students can be certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to teach mathematics in grades 7 through 12. The professional education curriculum includes: Foundations of Teaching, Psychology of Learning and Teaching, Assessment and Evaluation, Reading Strategies for Secondary Teaching, Meeting the Needs of Students with Exceptionalities: Middle and High School Level, Methods of Teaching Secondary Mathematics, Secondary Education Placements I, II, and III, Professional Seminar in Education, and Student Teaching

 

College Connections

The Department of Mathematics is in the School of Sciences in the College of Engineering and Business.

Students have the opportunity to tutor fellow undergraduates in the Mathematics Center.

Because of the other degrees offered at Gannon, mathematics majors have the opportunity to concentrate in areas such as biology, chemistry, computer science, mechanical/electrical/software engineering, criminal justice and political science.

Gannon mathematics professors regularly attend conferences of the Mathematical Association of America, American Mathematical Society, and the International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics. They have published in journals such as Convergence, Discrete Mathematics, the Journal of Algebra, the Journal of Combinatorial Theory and Transactions of the American Mathematical Society

Major Facts

    • Gannon mathematics students gain leadership and professional experience through involvement in the Mathematical Association of America, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Association for Women in Mathematics and volunteer work with the MATHCOUNTS competition.

    • Gannon students have participated in undergraduate research at programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation, and have competed in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling and the William Lowell Putnam Competition.

    • Approximately half of Gannon’s mathematics graduates go on to graduate school immediately. Recent alumni have continued their studies at schools such as the University of Michigan, Ohio State University and West Virginia University.

    • 2006 graduate Jodie Styers says: “I felt confident and comfortable to either continue on to graduate school or to lead my own classroom. Additionally, my experiences at Gannon allowed me to grow, not only academically, but also in character and faith.”
