What You'll Be Doing

Gannon University believes in the importance of recording history through storytelling and reporting. Whether you are interested in acquiring practical writing skills, investigating the theories of public relations and advertising, learning the history of media, or discussing ethical issues confronting today’s media industry, Gannon’s journalism communications program can help you explore and investigate many career possibilities. As a journalism communications major, you will experience an interdisciplinary program designed to provide you with a thorough background in journalism for both print and electronic media. You will also experience three different practicums, where you will put classroom theory into practice in the ever evolving field of journalism.

Employment forecasts indicate the demand for news will create job opportunities and job growth will likely occur in newer media areas, such as online newspapers and magazines. As a journalism communications major, you will be prepared for a career in radio, television, newspaper reporting, radio and television production, public relations, advertising, interactive digital media and continued education.

College Connections

Because the journalism communications major combines courses offered through both the English department and the theatre and communications arts department, students will receive exposure to a wide range of opportunities and teaching styles.

All Gannon journalism communications students have the opportunity to participate in organizations such as the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association; they can see how their work stacks up against journalism students throughout the country by participating in various contests offered by state, regional and national journalism organizations.
