Gannon University believes in the many possible paths scientists can travel. If you are interested in genetics, zoology, microbiology, wildlife, environmental sciences or the general science of life, Gannon’s biology program can help you explore possibilities for building a career in the science field that you love. As a biology major, you will gain a strong foundation in molecular and cellular biology, and will be challenged to develop an inquisitive mind and an ability to apply scientific reasoning.
Knowledge of biology can be applied in areas such as: agricultural research, agronomy, biophysics, developmental biology, environmental law, forensic medicine, forestry, genetic counseling, immunology, medicine, dentistry, molecular biology, education, veterinary medicine, evolutionary ecology, genetic toxicology, environmental microbiology, bioinformatics, medical and scientific writing, neuroscience, wildlife conservation, resource management, biotechnology and more. Before graduating, Gannon biology majors have many opportunities to experience hands-on research, both on and off campus, through internships in many of these fields. These valuable experiences help students explore and choose how they will apply their knowledge to a successful and inspiring career.
• The biology department offers three faculty mentored research courses that allow students to conduct research independently with an experienced mentor.
• All faculty in the biology department teach laboratory courses; secondary biology education majors are encouraged to gain valuable teaching experience as student laboratory assistants.
• Gannon’s faculty in the biology department have diverse interests in cellular and molecular biology, ecology, microbiology, animal behavior, wildlife management, physiology, embryology, developmental biology, biochemistry, field biology and botany.
• Members of the biology department have previously worked on Lake Erie limnological projects, conducted small mammal studies throughout various habitats in northwestern Pennsylvania, studied fish in Erie County, and conducted a cancer research project with a local health care facility.
• The study of biology, combined with Gannon’s liberal studies core curriculum, challenges students to explore ethical issues and develop an understanding of and a respect for life that refl ects the Catholic Tradition.
• Incoming freshman biology majors are eligible for the Dr. Elmer Kohlmiller scholarship award. Biology majors can also receive research funds from the James J. Duratz Student Research Fund and the Beta Beta Beta National Honorary Society.
• Gannon biology majors can obtain leadership and professional experience through the Beta Beta Beta (Tri Beta) Biological Honorary Society, the Women in Science and Engineering Club (WISE) and the Environmental Science Club.
• Each spring, students can participate in a one week travel and study for credit experience to explore ecosystems in the Bahama Islands. Students can also travel to Yellowstone National Park for credit during a two week trip in the summer.
• Research facilities on Gannon’s campus include: a model room with over $100,000 worth of human anatomical models and charts, a human cadaver lab, a physiology lab that has recently been updated with new software technology, and several research vessels, including The Environaut, which is used to collect samples and conduct research in Lake Erie and the Presque Isle Bay.
• Recent summer internship sites for biology students include the PA Department of Agriculture, University of Houston, Duke University, Case Western Reserve University, Roswell Park Cancer Center and Yellowstone National Park. Biology majors also continue to be involved in local biological internships at Presque Isle State Park and the Asbury Woods Nature Center.
