section 1.1: University Honors Advisory Council
The Honors Advisory Council (HAC) consists of up to five faculty members appointed by the director of the University honors program; three students, appointed by the Student Advisory Board; the chairperson of the Student Advisory Board; and the director of the honors program, who serves as chairperson of the HAC. This council advises the director about policy for the program.
section 1.2: Student Advisory Board
A student-elected Student Advisory Board (SAB) governs the program. The SAB meets once a month to make administrative decisions about the program. The board consists of up to 18 student members as well as the director of the honors program. The 18 students are divided by classes as follows:
Elections for the senior, junior, and sophomore positions are held in April of each school year. Those elected will serve their term the following year. Students nominate themselves by submitting a paragraph before the April monthly meetings stating their qualifications and why they wish to serve on the board. The elections are held at the April monthly meetings. Each student votes for five candidates. Students vote only for candidates from their own class. The outgoing senior board members together with the director then tally the votes. The five students from each class who receive the highest number of votes begin their one-year term with the April SAB meeting.
Elections for the three freshman representatives are held at the November meetings. Students also nominate themselves by submitting a paragraph stating the reasons for their candidacy. The freshman students vote for three candidates. The three candidates receiving the highest number of votes serve as the representatives of their class. They begin their term of office at the December SAB meeting and serve for the remainder of the school year.
In the event of a tie in any class election, the SAB will decide whom to appoint to the board. In most cases, more than the allotted five upperclassmen or three freshmen will be selected.
In the event that the number of candidates for any or all classes is less than or equal to the designated five upperclassmen representatives or three freshman representatives, all candidates are appointed to the SAB.
The executive board of the Student Advisory Board consists of the chairperson, vice-chairperson, secretary and treasurer. The executive board meets with the director of the honors program prior to monthly SAB meetings and the monthly honors meetings to draw up the agenda for both meetings. The offices are as follows:
Voting for these positions takes place at the final (April) SAB meeting of the school year. This meeting takes place at or before the end-of-the-year dinner attended by the old and new members of the SAB. Students may nominate themselves or another student for any position on the executive board. A member of any class is eligible for a position on the board. Elections for the positions occur in the order in which they appear above. Votes are cast by both the outgoing and incoming board members. The outgoing chairperson, a non-voting member, conducts the elections and, together with the director, tallies the votes. He or she reports the results immediately. Students may run for as many positions as they desire, provided they have not yet been elected to an executive position.
In the event of a tie in these elections, the candidate or candidates not receiving the highest number of votes will be eliminated and the group will vote again for the candidates who tied. If all the candidates tie, the chairperson will cast the tie-breaking vote. He or she will vote before announcing the decision.
section 1.3: Director of the University Honors Program
The University honors program is administered by the director who is appointed by the provost and vice president for academic affairs upon the recommendation of the Honors Advisory Council. The director will be given six-credit per semester released time and serves for a three-year term, which is renewable. The director has full responsibility for the program and serves as ex officio chair of the Honors Advisory Council and advisor to the Student Advisory Board.
