Section 2: Committee Structure
section 2.1: Overview and Purpose of the Committee Structure
The committees within the honors program, under the supervision of the SAB, plan activities for the members of the program. The committees are open to anyone who desires to participate. Each committee has a chairperson elected by the committee members themselves. The standing committees are described in sections 2.2 through 2.9; section 2.10 provides the SAB with the authority to create ad hoc committees as it deems necessary. It should be noted that any event that costs more than $150 must be approved by the Student Advisory Board. Exceptions may be made by the treasurer of the SAB.
section 2.2: Cultural Committee
The cultural committee organizes and sponsors cultural events. Examples include Gannon plays, concerts, and museum trips.
section 2.3: Educational Committee
The educational committee plans the educational events for the program. The goal is to sponsor one or two events per semester. The most common event is a talk by a guest speaker. The educational committee may be combined with the cultural committee if that seems appropriate.
The social committee plans one or two social events per month. The aim is to build community among the members of the program. This committee plans and arranges the president's reception in the fall, the banquet in the spring, the picnic at the beginning of the school year and the advising day luncheons. Other activities have included a movie night, billiards, ice skating, skiing, bowling, hiking trips, and study breaks during finals week.
section 2.5: Publicity Committee
The publicity committee serves as a means of communicating honors events to the program and the rest of the Gannon community. This may be done through announcements, posters and signs. In addition, this committee sends out reminders for the monthly meetings to all the members of the program.
section 2.6: Curriculum Committee
The curriculum committee, in consultation with the director of the program, is responsible for the courses and the faculty who teach in the program. This responsibility includes the selection, orientation, and evaluation of teachers and courses, proposals for new courses and teachers, and the sequencing of courses.
section 2.7: Social Concerns Committee
The social concerns committee informs the members of the program about service/community projects that are available and organizes their participation. It also plans and organizes its own service projects. Past events have included helping at the campus ministry dinners, volunteering at the food bank, and participation in community clean-up projects.
section 2.8: Historian/Photographer
The historian/photographer keeps a scrapbook that documents the events of each school year. In addition, he or she serves as photographer for the program.
section 2.9: Excalibur Newsletter
The editor and his or her staff produce the Excalibur , the honors program newsletter. The Excalibur is published monthly and is sent out one week prior to the monthly meetings to all members and faculty of the University honors program. The staff includes the editor, assistant editor, layout designer, proofreaders, writers, and circulation staff.
section 2.10: Ad Hoc Committees
Ad hoc committees may be formed by the SAB if the need arises. These committees will choose their own chairperson who will serve for the duration of the project or issue.
