section 6: Activities
section 6.1: Mentoring Program
Participants in the mentoring program travel to an area school once a week to tutor grade school students in their studies. These children are often "at-risk" children who reside in poor housing and non-traditional family settings. The mentors participate in a brief training session prior to the mentoring process. Traditionally, four honors students (one from each class) administer this program and serve an unlimited term. The upper-class coordinator and the director of the Center for Social Concerns select the new coordinators on the basis of an application and an interview.
section 6.2: Big Brother/Big Sister Program
The Big Brother/Big Sister Program introduces the incoming freshmen to the honors program. The freshmen are paired with upperclassmen who write letters welcoming the new students. This pairing gives the incoming students an opportunity to communicate with upper class members and have their questions or concerns addressed before the start of the school year. This program is coordinated by the director and any student who wishes to help.
