Course Related Library Instruction
About Instruction
Conducted by American Library Association certified library faculty. The purpose of the instruction is to enable students to effectively meet course research requirements. To this end, applicable research strategies and resources are shared. Based upon the course, librarians can anticipate what the students will need to learn; however, the more collaboration between the librarian and instructor, the more effective is the instruction.
Library instruction makes the library a research tool rather than a research obstacle. Areas addressed include:
- developing and understanding research topics
- recognizing and analyzing the different types of information (e.g. scholarly articles as opposed to book reviews)
- identifying and understanding the resources available to find information (e.g. library catalog, articles indices)
A room is designated in the Reference Department to conduct instruction. It includes a dais, and 30 seats for audience members (note: this room is only for library use). Librarians are also willing to provide instruction anywhere on campus as long as necessary resources are provided for the instruction.
