What You Should Know About Seasonal Flu and H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu)

Gannon University is committed to protecting the health and safety of its students, faculty and staff. Here is what you should know about Seasonal Flu and H1N1 Influenza.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that this virus is contagious and spreading from person to person similar to the seasonal flu. The (H1N1) flu virus is spread the same way the seasonal flu spreads, through respiratory droplets by coughing, sneezing or touching respiratory droplets on oneself or another person or object.

Symptoms of H1N1 flu virus are also similar to symptoms of seasonal flu.

Symptoms include:

  • Fever of 100 dd
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Most people who have been sick with the virus have recovered at home without treatment.

The University and Student Health Services have been monitoring information on a regular basis from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Erie County Department of Health. We remind you to wash your hands thoroughly and often, and to cover your mouth – preferably with the crook of your arm – when coughing or sneezing.

You are encouraged to be vigilant about germ control, especially in close living quarters. You are also urged to stay home and limit your contact with others if you experience flu-like symptoms.

Students who have questions or concerns should call Student Health Services at 871-7622 or visit the new location in the lower level of Harborview. The entrance is on 6th Street to the right of the main entrance.

Employees are urged to consult their family physician.
