CIS DEPARTMENT TO SPONSOR CONTEST FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Gannon University is sponsoring a computer programming contest open to area high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

The contest is designed for students interested in programming in Visual Basic, C++, Java, or other high-level programming languages. Entries can be written in any programming language that is executable on a PC running a LINUX or Windows operating system.

All students who enter must have a sponsoring teacher from their respective high school. Entries must be accompanied by the teacher’s contact information as well as clear documentation of the problem the program is intended to solve, the capabilities of the program, and its correct operation.

Students can make submissions individually or as a group. There is no cost to enter.

Interested students can register online for the contest beginning Jan. 7, 2008. The deadline for project submissions is March 3, 2008.

Winners will be announced in April and cash prizes will be awarded. The contest is designed to encourage students who are interested in computing and reward quality work.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Diversity Day: Gannon recently hosted about 20 high school students, pictured above, from Iroquois, East, Central Tech, Collegiate Academy, and Strong Vincent for the universitys Diversity Day. The event was intended to help minority students who might not see college as a viable option better determine if it is right for them. During their visit, the students heard presentations from Wes Whiteside, an enrollment advisor with the Office of Admissions, and from Johnson Olanrewaju, Ph.D., assistant professor, environmental science. The group also toured the campus.
