GANNON TO HOST ANNUAL FALL OPEN HOUSE SUNDAY, NOV. 4

Gannon University on Sunday, Nov. 4 will host its annual Fall Open House.

Students and their parents can attend an optional mass at 11 a.m. in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel, 512 Peach Street. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the lobby of the Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street.

The day’s schedule includes a number of activities:

  • From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., students and their parents can meet with representatives from Student Development in the Hammermill Center, Peach Street and South Park Row.
  • From 12:30-1 p.m., Gannon University President Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D., and others will offer welcoming remarks in the Hammermill Center.
  • From 1:15-2 p.m., an Admissions and Financial Aid presentation will be given in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Campus Center.
  • From 1-3:30 p.m., students and their parents can meet with faculty members, administrators, and athletic coaches; attend academic presentations; and tour the campus and downtown Erie.
  • From 3:30-4:30 p.m., a second Admissions and Financial Aid presentation will be given in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Campus Center. Students also can schedule one-on-one appointments with admissions staff (advance registration is required).

In addition, students can enter Scholarship Contests in eight academic disciplines: English, French, Spanish, German, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, and Education. Contest winners are eligible for annual scholarships up to $3,000 should they decide to enroll at Gannon.

 

 

RECENT NEWS AND HIGHLIGHTS

News of interest on and around campus...

  • U.S. Rep. Phil English on Friday morning held a press conference in the Boardroom of Old Main. English and Dr. Garibaldi highlighted the importance of strengthening the study of the arts and humanities within higher education. English co-chairs the Congressional Humanities Caucus and advocates policies and programs designed to raise the awareness of the role of history, literature, languages, philosophy, ethics, religion, government, and linguistics. October is National Arts & Humanities Month. Said English, “Our efforts on behalf of humanities are critical to the promotion of culture and higher learning in academia. I commend Gannon University for its leadership on this issue and look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Garibaldi and other educational experts to see what more we can do, on all levels, to ensure the arts and humanities continue to play a critical role in higher education.”

  • Special thanks to Gannon colleagues for their help with media interview requests. WSEE-TV and WICU-TV interviewed Dr. Dolores Sarafinski at McKinley Elementary school to promote her Hooked on Books! Read-a-thon to be held in the Yehl Room on Saturday, Nov. 3. Rev. Michael Kesicki, instructor, theology department, did an interview with Dana Massing of the Erie Times-News on a series of articles for Priesthood Sunday. The articles ran in the Faith section on Saturday, Oct. 27.

  • Their two tons worth: More than 150 Gannon students, faculty, and staff volunteered for Saturday’s food drive to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank. They collected more than 4,200 pounds of food. Thanks to all who made the event a great success!

 

 

CAMPUS EVENTS

  • Monday, October 29 – Lecture on Oaxaca Crisis: The lecture, to be given by Miguel Angel Vasquez de la Rosa, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Yehl Room.

  • Thursday, November 1 – Community Mass: 11 a.m. in the Chapel. Nov. 1 is also All Saints’ Day and is a holy day of obligation. Masses will be offered at 8 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 4:35 p.m.

  • Friday, November 2 – Gannon University’s Erie Chamber Orchestra: The Edinboro University singers, with Choral Director Peter Van den Hornert will be the soloist. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Central Tech auditorium, 3325 Cherry St.

  • Sunday, November 4 – Fall Open House: Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Waldron lobby. Two Admissions and Financial Aid presentations will be held, as will numerous other activities. For more information, call ext. 7240.

  • Thursday, November 15 – Lunch n Learn: The speaker will be Elisa Konieczko, Ph.D., who will discuss the “Controversy and Promise of Stem Cells.” The event is free and will be held at 12 p.m. in the Old Main Boardroom.

  • Monday, November 19 – Faculty Scholarship Celebration: 3 p.m. in the Yehl Room. Come and honor your colleagues.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Come on in: Dr. Garibaldi welcomes Jay DiFrank to the Robert H. Morosky Academic Center, located at 150 West 10th Street (formerly the Verizon building). The 100,000 square foot building recently was opened for tours by faculty, staff, and administrators and will be open again for tours from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 30. Extensive renovations will be done prior to its official opening.
