FOUR HONORED AT ANNUAL DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARDS DINNER

Gannon University on Saturday night honored four individuals at its annual Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner.

The dinner was held in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street. This year’s dinner was incorporated into the university’s annual Alumni Homecoming/Reunion Weekend.

The honorees were:

From the College of Humanities, Business and Education – Robert P. Barker, Gannon class of 1972, bachelor’s degree in business administration. Barker serves as vice president of Parker Hannifin Corp. and president of Parker Aerospace, a position he has held since 2003. Parker Aerospace designs, manufactures, and services hydraulic, fuel and pneumatic components, and systems for the aerospace market and is a supplier to Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, and other aerospace OEMs. Barker is responsible for all fiscal and operational aspects of the group’s 11 divisions, which employ 5,500 people in 34 locations worldwide. 

He began his career as an internal auditor at Zurn Industries in Erie in 1973. He was promoted to controller at Metal Bellows, a division of Zurn which was sold to Parker Hannifin Corp. Barker in 1990 was promoted to general manager of one of Parker Aerospace’s military divisions. He then held general manager positions in two other divisions before being named vice president of operations for Parker Aerospace.

Barker serves as a member of the Board of Governors of the Aerospace Industries Association and as a member of the University of California Irvine Executive Roundtable.

From the College of Sciences, Engineering, and Health Sciences – Richard H. Heibel, M.D., Gannon class of 1968, bachelor’s degree in biology. Heibel currently is a clinical professor of internal medicine at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (LECOM) campus in Bradenton, Fla. Other medical school appointments he has held include clinical assistant professor of medicine for Hahnemann Medical School and instructor and co-chair of clinical cardiology at LECOM.

He also is a co-founder of Tollgrade Communications in Cheswick, Pa., and serves on the company’s Board of Directors. He serves on the national board for the non-profit Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation in Kansas City.

After receiving his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1972, Heibel completed an internship and residency in internal medicine, becoming certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1973. He spent two more years in a fellowship to specialize in cardiology and was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Cardiology, in 1976 and in Cardiovascular Diseases in 1977. 

Heibel returned to Erie and joined the medical staff at Saint Vincent Health Center. He later established the Saint Vincent Internal Medicine Seminar and was elected chief of medicine in 1981.

Heibel and his former associates, Consultants in Cardiology in Erie, pioneered the use of coronary angioplasty, a non-surgical procedure for preventing heart attacks, in the Erie region in 1980.

Young Alumna Award – Dana M. Fallon, Esq., Gannon class of 1991, bachelor’s degree in psychology. Fallon is an attorney with Ritzert & Leyton, P.C., located in Fairfax, Va. Her practice focuses on advising institutions of higher education regarding compliance with accreditation standards and state and federal laws. She has published numerous articles in national magazines on legal topics relevant to higher education in addition to offering presentations at regional, state, and national association conferences.

At Gannon, Fallon was a member of the Student Government Executive Committee and served as a resident advisor. She was honored as the SGA Outstanding Class Representative three times.

Since 2003, Fallon has served as the Washington, D.C., regional director for Gannon’s National Alumni Board. She also currently is serving a three-year term on the board and has coordinated numerous alumni events, surveyed alumni regarding their interest in future events, and helped implement key changes to the Alumni Association’s bylaws.

Fallon earned a master’s degree in higher education administration from Kent State University and a law degree from the George Mason University School of Law. She has been a member of the Virginia State Bar since 1999.

Monsignor Wilfrid J. Nash Principles of Christian Conduct Award – Judith L. Jacobus, M.D., Gannon class of 1982, bachelor’s degree in health sciences. Jacobus is a practicing family physician in Altoona, Pa. She received a doctor of medicine degree from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in 1987 following her pre-medical studies at Gannon.

In addition to her medical practice, Jacobus is also active in the community. She serves on several boards, including those for the Susquehanna Rural Free Clinic in Frenchville, Pa.; St. Leonard’s Home, a personal care home in Hollidaysburg, Pa.; the Academy of Sacred Music, a non-profit community school of the arts in Altoona; and the Wachter Foundation, which provides scholarships to Blair County High School seniors. She has served as a volunteer physician at a free clinic in Altoona for the past seven years and has been active in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and her parish, St. John the Evangelist. She also has served as a religious education instructor, confirmation team member, parish council member, and co-coordinator at St. John for Disciples in Mission, a diocesan-wide, scripture based, faith-sharing process.

She is also secretary for the Bishop’s Commission for Life and Justice of the Altoona-Johnstown diocese.

  • The Gannon Alumni Association invites you to the second Lunch and Learn Series. The speaker will be Dr. David Kozak, who will discuss the upcoming Midterm Elections. The event will be held from 12-1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 in the Old Main Boardroom. Lunch will be provided.   • Nancy Kujawinski, secretary, Student Organizations and Leadership Development, served as the survivor chairperson for “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer,” a walk held Saturday, Oct. 7. Several members of the Gannon Community volunteered by making the survivor gifts. A special thanks to: Kathleen Gausman, Beth Shick, Julie Srnka, Rita Miller, Cat Oakley, Bridget Rager, and SOLD work study, Shelley Lindenmuth.

  • A big thank you to everyone who helped to make Commuter Awareness Days successful! Your willingness to open your offices to the commuters and offer your hospitality is greatly appreciated.   • Schuster Fund for the Arts: Applications are now available. Schuster Fund grants help Gannon faculty and staff to offer arts-related programming for students. Full-time faculty, staff and professional librarians are eligible for Schuster Art Fund grants. The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 20.   • Campaign update: Since the beginning of the new fiscal year (July 1, 2006), nearly 140 Gannon University employees have made contributions to The Power To Transform Comprehensive Campaign. Those employees have given more than $47,600 to the Campaign. In addition, more than 500 employees and students attended the Tropical Transformation Community Kickoff event held in the Hammermill Center in August. Thanks to all those who participated in the event and contributed to the campaign. CAMPUS EVENTS

  • Friday, October 13 Gannon University’s Erie Chamber Orchestra: Conducted by Bruce Morton Wright. The concert will feature as soloist Patrick Jones (saxophone) and will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel.

  • Saturday, October 14 Scholarship Celebration: The honorees are George P. Hesch, Ph.D. (posthumously); Michael J. Minnaugh ’53; and Robert H. Morosky ’63. Each will receive the with the Archbishop Gannon Medal of Distinction. The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. in the Yehl Room.

  • Wednesday, October 18 Pizza with a Purpose: Dinner and Discussion Series on social issues. Scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Stubler Room. The focus of the session will be issues important to students related to the upcoming Midterm Elections. Call Arlene Montevecchio at ext. 7433 for more information.

  • Thursday, October 19 Lunch and Learn: Dr. David Kozak will discuss the upcoming Midterm Elections. The event will be held from 12-1 p.m. in the Old Main Boardroom. Lunch will be provided. For more information call ext. 7473.

  • Sunday-Thursday, October 22-26 Busy Person’s Retreat: The opening session will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Upper Lounge of the Student Services Building. During the retreat, participants will devote 30 minutes to daily prayer and spend 30 minutes daily with a spiritual mentor. Registration by Oct. 18 is encouraged.
