STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN SERVICE TRIP DURING FALL SEMESTER BREAK

Five Gannon University students will spend their mid-semester fall break on a service trip that also will double as a training exercise.

The students, along with two Gannon staff members, will leave for Frenchville, Pa., on Tuesday, Oct. 9, and will return to campus on Friday, Oct. 12. In between, the group will stay at an organization called Young People Who Care, Inc.

Gannon’s fall semester break runs from Oct. 10-12.

The trip is intended mainly as a training exercise for the five students, each of whom will serve as student leaders on the volunteer service trips that they and other Gannon students will make next year during spring break and after the academic year.

“Making a trip in the fall like this is a new effort and should be a valuable opportunity for these five students to further develop their leadership skills,” said Arlene Montevecchio, director of the Gannon University Center for Social Concerns. “They will also learn about simplicity, which is always a focus of our service trips. This experience will be a good reminder of why they want to serve as student leaders next year.”

During the trip to Frenchville, the students will spend the first day participating in leadership training and a retreat. Areas like community building, conflict resolution, and reflection on social issues will be the focus of the leadership training, while the retreat will emphasize Catholic social teaching, Montevecchio said.

The second day in Frenchville will be devoted to community service. The group will be working for Young People Who Care and helping low-income and disabled residents in Clearfield and Centre counties with home repairs and other tasks. Young People Who Care’s mission statement is, “Catholic grassroots ministry.”

The participating students are (along with the service trips for which they will be serving as student leaders next year): Bethany Herbold (Mexico), Brandon Kleckner (New York City), Andrew Pennock (New York City), Mallory Croston (South Dakota), and Kimberly Urbanowicz (New Orleans).
