GANNON TO HONOR, CELEBRATE COMMUTERS WITH AWARENESS DAYS

Gannon University will celebrate its commuter students this week.

Gannon’s Office of Commuter Life will host Commuter Awareness Days Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 23-24. Commuter Awareness Days are designed to honor Gannon’s 1,000+ commuter students as well as strengthen their connection with the University over two fun-filled days.

Since some commuters are not on campus as much as some of their resident counterparts, the event is also intended to help commuters become more familiar with the many resources and academic support services available to help them succeed. For instance, all students can take advantage of University offices like the Academic Advising Center, Math Center, Writing Center, Commonwealth Academic Achievement Program/Act 101, Health Center, Financial Aid Office, Campus Ministry, Activities Programming Board, Student Government Association, New Student Services, Counseling Services, and Career Development and Employment Services.

In addition, one lucky commuter will win $100 in a drawing.

“It’s important to further the interaction that commuters have with Gannon faculty, staff, and administrators, and increase our awareness of their unique needs as well,” said Heidi B. Noyes, director of the University’s Office of Commuter Life. “Some of the commuters are non-traditional students and have children of their own, while some are juggling their studies with working more than 30 hours a week off campus.”

The event will be based in the “Commuter Corner,” room 2202 of the Palumbo Center.

RECENT NEWS AND HIGHLIGHTS

News of interest on and around campus...

  • A note from Dr. Garibaldi: As a priest of the Diocese of Erie, Fr. Nicholas Rouch has been entrusted with duties at Gannon as well as responsibilities in the diocesan Office of Education and St. Mark  Seminary. Bishop Trautman and I have agreed that Fr. Rouch will be on temporary leave from the University, beginning Oct. 1, and for the remainder of the academic year, so that he can devote more time to his responsibilities as Vicar for Education. It is our expectation that Fr. Rouch will return to his duties at the University for the 2009-10 academic year.
  • Some 134 Gannon students donated blood to the Community Blood Bank of Northwest  when Gannon hosted a drive on Sept. 11. Gannon’s outstanding effort marked the Blood Bank’s biggest one-day drive in several months. Thanks to all of those who helped make the drive so successful!
  • Let’s keep the trophy: The 7th annual WQLN Collegiate Challenge will begin Oct. 24. The Challenge is a competition between local universities to see which can raise the most money, compared to the previous year, for public radio. This year, WQLN also will offer a second trophy for the college that raises the most money overall. The drive will be broadcast on location with students, faculty, and staff answering the pledge lines. In 2007, Gannon won the WQLN Member Trophy. Gannon’s day to shine will be Monday, Oct. 27. You can tune in to WQLN Radio on 91.3FM or visit https://www.wqln.com/secured/support/member/default.asp.

  • Freshmen Profiles: Please take a moment to check out on the Gannon web site the profiles of nearly 20 Gannon freshmen. You can learn more about these young men and women at: http://www.gannon.edu/admiss/undergrad/freshmen.asp.
