NORDQUEST TO GIVE LECTURE ON JAMES MADISON FOR CONSTITUTION DAY

A Gannon University faculty member will discuss the presidency of James Madison during the university’s annual observance of Constitution Day.

The lecture, to be given by David A. Nordquest, Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy at Gannon, will begin at 11:15 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17. It is free and open to the public and will be held in room 1200 of the Palumbo Academic Center, 824 Peach Street.

Nordquest’s presentation is titled, “James Madison and the American Constitution.” Nordquest extensively has studied newer research that sheds more light on Madison – the fourth president of the United States and regarded as the “Father of the Constitution” – as an important political philosopher of his time.

Last October, Nordquest presented a scholarly paper at Louisiana State University-Shreveport regarding the implications of these recent findings; his paper has been accepted as a chapter in a forthcoming book. Nordquest did his doctoral work in political philosophy at Duke University, where he also has continued to research philosophy and the law.

According to Wikipedia, Constitution Day is an American federal holiday that recognizes the ratification of the United States Constitution. The holiday is observed on Sept. 17, the day the U.S. Conventional Constitution signed the Constitution in 1787.

The law establishing the holiday was created in 2004 through an amendment by U.S. Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia.
