GANNON TO HOST EVENTS TO MARK ANNIVERSARIES OF KATRINA, 9/11 TRAGEDIES

Gannon University will host a series of events to mark the anniversaries of two recent American tragedies: Hurricane Katrina and September 11.

On Tuesday, Aug. 29, staff from the university’s Center for Social Concerns will raise money for those affected by Katrina. The Center for Social Concerns will collect donations from Gannon students, faculty, and staff and other passersby in the Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All proceeds will go to the Archdiocese of New Orleans Catholic Schools, which is providing the only elementary education in the area through five central Catholic schools. In addition, in New Orleans’ East End and Uptown areas, some public schools haven’t yet opened, according to Arlene Montevecchio, director of the Center for Social Concerns.

The Center for Social Concerns also will distribute prayer cards specifically for victims of Katrina. Tomorrow, Aug. 29, is the one-year anniversary of when the hurricane devastated the Gulf Coast region.

On Thursday, Sept. 7, Gannon will host an ecumenical prayer service at 11 a.m. in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street. The interfaith service will focus on the ongoing struggle to stabilize Iraq and other tensions in the Middle East, including the recent bloodshed between Israel and Hezbollah.

The service is sponsored by the Office of Campus Ministry.

In remembrance of the 9/11 tragedy, Gannon will host “Pizza with a Purpose: Cultural Responses to 9/11.” The event will be held from 5-6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11, in the Stubler Room of the Waldron Center.

Over pizza, Gannon students will discuss and reflect how Americans have responded to the events of 9/11 through popular culture, such as the recently-released Oliver Stone movie “World Trade Center.” Montevecchio said the students also will discuss whether those responses have helped Americans through the healing process in the five years since the attacks, and how pop culture has influenced our perceptions of 9/11.
