GANNON RECEIVES $30,000 GRANT FROM NEWCOMBE FOUNDATION

Award will fund scholarship aid for mature women students

Gannon University recently was awarded a $30,000 grant from the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation.

The grant will allow the university to continue offering Newcombe Scholarships for Mature Women Students in the 2007-08 academic year. Gannon was one of only 25 universities and colleges to receive awards, totaling $900,000, from the Newcombe Foundation.

Gannon was selected in part because of the “excellent” supportive services the university provides to returning women students, the foundation noted in a letter to Gannon University President Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D.

Foundation officials also acknowledged the work of Anita L. Miller, Gannon’s director, research and foundation relations, for her continued oversight of the Newcombe scholarship program.

Since 1998, the Newcombe Foundation, located in Princeton, N.J., has awarded Gannon a total of $197,000. The current $30,000 grant represents an increase of $5,000, or 20 percent, over the foundation’s award to Gannon last year.

Scholarship recipients must be female students age 25 and older, as mandated by the Newcombe Foundation. In addition, the scholarships are awarded on the basis of need and academic achievement, and recipients must have already completed half the credits required for their degree.

Newcombe Scholarships also are designed to aid women who, according to the foundation, “have exhausted other sources of funding, but who are close to realizing their academic goals and beginning their new careers.”
