TWO SHAKESPEARE FAVORITES HIGHLIGHT ‘SUMMER NIGHTS’ PERFORMANCES

Local Shakespeare enthusiasts will have a chance to see at Gannon University in July free performances of two Shakespearian favorites.

The University’s sixth annual Shakespeare Summer Nights begins Thursday, July 9 with a performance of King Lear. Additional performances of King Lear – the tale of a once-mighty king’s fall from greatness – will be held Friday and Saturday, July 10-11.

Gannon’s performances of King Lear are directed by Zach Flock, Gannon class of 2005, and features Fr. Shawn Clerkin ‘86, Chris Sanner ‘87, Almi Clerkin ‘85, Alaina Manchester ‘07, and Chris Watson ‘08.

Shakespeare Summer Nights also includes showings of Julius Caesar on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, July 16-18. The original political thriller, Caesar chronicles the conspiracy behind the assassination of the Roman dictator, and the aftermath of the crime. The performances are directed by Josh Mizikowski and feature Chris Watson ‘08, Nathan McCarty, Evan O’Polka, Charity Walker, and Brittany Barnebei.

All Shakespeare Summer Nights performances are free and open to the public and will begin at 7 p.m. in the courtyard area of the Robert H. Morosky Academic Center, 150 West 10th. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs.

For more information, contact the box office at Gannon University’s Schuster Theatre at ext. 7494, or call ext. 7720.

Editor’s Note: The front page of today’s Erie Times-News includes a Q & A with Fr. Shawn Clerkin about this week’s performances of “King Lear” as part of Gannon’s Shakespeare series. Check it out!

EXTREME MAKEOVER

Gannon University student-athletes, coaches, and cheerleaders were extremely generous in volunteering their time to help ABC-TV’s hit show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” Members of the Gannon football, volleyball, and cheerleading teams were instrumental in helping the show and the process, which resulted in a new home constructed for Clara Ward, founder of the former Youth Development Center for abused and neglected children. Ward is the recipient of Erie’s first “extreme” home after her former home in the 600 block of East 21st Street was demolished and rebuilt from the ground up in a matter of days. A complete photo gallery, depicting the help given by Gannon’s student-athletes, coaches, and cheerleaders, can be accessed at http://www.gannonsports.com/photo_gallery.aspx?gallery=10.
