STUDENTS, ALUMNI TO BEGIN MEDICAL, PROFESSIONAL, AND PHARMACY SCHOOL

            Some 30 Gannon University students and alumni will continue their studies by attending medical, professional, and pharmacy schools in the fall 2007 semester.

The students and alumni are the latest example of the strength of Gannon’s academic programs in the health sciences and related fields, as well as the consistently high placement rates for students in those programs.

The following students will begin studying in medical and related programs in the fall semester:

Amber L. Alesse of Pittsburgh, Pa., will attend the University of Tennessee School of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville. She is the daughter of Joseph and Deborah Alesse and is a graduate of Upper Saint Clair High School.

Alexander M. Bules of Cleveland, Ohio, will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie. He is the son of Christine and William Bules and is a graduate of Lutheran High School West.

Jason Carlin of Pleasantville, Pa., will attend Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He is the son of Deb and Charles Carlin and is a graduate of Titusville High School.

Valerie Drabina-Dombrowski of Erie, Pa., will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie. She is the daughter of Mary and William Drabina and is a graduate of Mercyhurst Prep.

John W. Evankovich III of Karns City, Pa., will attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is the son of John Evankovich and Susan Strobel and is a graduate of Karns City Area High School.

Lisa M. Fairman of DuBois, Pa., will attend the Penn State University School of Medicine. She is the daughter of Joyce and Alan Fairman and is a graduate of DuBois Central Christian.

Aneesha Ghaiy of Erie, Pa., will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie. She is the daughter of Sadhna and Rajan Ghaiy and is a graduate of Fairview High School.

Sarah E. Hagerty of Pittsburgh, Pa., will attend the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is the daughter of Margaret and Michael Hagerty and is a graduate of Vincentian Academy.

Michael Q. Huynh of Brooklyn Park, Minn., will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie. He is the son of Kimanh and Tuan Huynh and is a graduate of Totino-Grace High School.

Stephen B. Iorfido of Johnsonburg, Pa., will attend the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is the son of Carol and Stephen Iorfido and is a graduate of Johnsonburg Area High School.

Anna C. Irwin of Somerset, Pa., will attend the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is the daughter of Miriam and Richard Irwin and is a graduate of Somerset Area Senior High School.

Alanna M. Martini of Gibsonia, Pa., will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM). She is the daughter of Eileen and Robert Martini and is a graduate of Hampton High School.

Jeremy McCullough of Clarks Mills, Pa., will attend the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is the son of Carol and David McCullough and is a graduate of Commodore Perry High School.

Cassandra A. Stache of Charleroi, Pa., will attend the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia. She is the daughter of Sheryl and Stephen Stache and is a graduate of Charleroi Area High School.

Ryan S. Valencic of Wake Forest, N.C., will attend Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He is the son of Gwendolyn and Steve Valencic and is a graduate of Somerset Area Senior High School.

In addition, 15 Gannon students will begin studying in pharmacy programs in the fall semester.

Gannon and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie together offer an accelerated, five-year doctor of pharmacy program in which students complete the two-year pre-pharmacy program at Gannon and then attend the LECOM School of Pharmacy.

In addition, Gannon and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh offer a similar, six-year doctor of pharmacy program.

The students are:

Christina M. Artz of Erie, Pa., will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Pharmacy. She is the daughter of Ellen and Dane Artz and is a graduate of McDowell High School.

Megan R. Burley of Falls Creek, Pa., will attend the Mylan School of Pharmacy at Duquesne University. She is the daughter of Michele and David Burley and is a graduate of DuBois Central Catholic.

Amber L. Cogis of Clinton, Pa., will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Pharmacy. She is the daughter of Sherri and Michael Cogis and is a graduate of South Side High School.

Nida T. Hallal of Highland Heights, Ohio, will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Pharmacy. She is the daughter of Iris and Richard Hallal and is a graduate of Regina High School.

Matthew J. Mallary of New Galilee, Pa., will attend the Idaho State University College of Pharmacy in Pocatello, Idaho. He is the son of Barb and John Mallary and is a graduate of Seneca Valley Senior High School.

Kristen M. McFadden of Cranesville, Pa., will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Pharmacy. She is the daughter of Brenda and Kirk McFadden and is a graduate of Harbor Creek Junior-Senior High School.

Megan E. McMunigle of Venango, Pa., will attend the Mylan School of Pharmacy at Duquesne University. She is the daughter of Margaret and Robert McMunigle and is a graduate of Cambridge Springs High School.

Pamela G. Ong of North Royalton, Ohio, will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Pharmacy. She is the daughter of Romeo Ong and is a graduate of North Royalton High School.

Kathleen M. Parise of Punxsutawney, Pa., will attend the Mylan School of Pharmacy at Duquesne University. She is the daughter of Marcia Parise and is a graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School.

Abbey L. Powers of DuBois, Pa., will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Pharmacy. She is the daughter of Cynthia and Michael Powers and is a graduate of DuBois Area Senior High School.

Carly M. Spataro of Meadville, Pa., will attend the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston. She is the daughter of Kathryn and John Spataro and is a graduate of Meadville Area Senior High School.

Cristina R. Stauffer of Niles, Ohio, will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Pharmacy. She is the daughter of Brenda and Terry Stauffer and is a graduate of McKinley High School.

Charles R. Stormer of Sykesville, Pa., will attend the Mylan School of Pharmacy at Duquesne University. He is the son of Janet and John Stormer and is a graduate of DuBois Area Senior High School.

Kurt L. Thorwart of Wilcox, Pa., will attend the Mylan School of Pharmacy at Duquesne University. He is the son of Doris and George Thorwart and is a graduate of Johnsonburg Area High School.

Amanda E. Way of Erie, Pa., will attend the St. John Fisher College School of Pharmacy in Rochester, N.Y. She is the daughter of Cynthia and David Way and is a graduate of McDowell High School.

 

 

RECENT NEWS AND HIGHLIGHTS

News of interest on and around campus...

  • Congratulations to Michelle Wiley, a 1998 graduate of Washington and Jefferson and currently an academic advisor with Gannons Academic Advising Center. In September, she will be just the second softball player in school history to be inducted into W & J’s Athletic Hall of Fame. As a player, Wiley was a four-time first-team All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) selection and three times was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Year. A 1996 National Softball Coaches Association all-region pitcher, Wiley led the nation with a 24-2 record as a sophomore, a mark that remains the 15th-best single-season record in Division III history. She also posted the country’s third-best earned-run average (0.57).

  • Gannon colleagues are invited to participate in Summer Orientation 2007 events. You and a spouse/guest are invited to attend the two remaining Sunday evening Parent Socials on July 8 and July 15 in the Yehl Ballroom, from 9-10:30 p.m. A Picnic Supper will be served in the Waldron Center at 5:15 p.m. on Sunday July 8 and 15. Members of your immediate family are invited to attend with you, compliments of New Student Services. If you are interested in attending, please contact New Student Services at ext. 7597 by the Thursday preceding each dinner to make a reservation and request your ticket(s). A ticket will be required for each person for admission to the picnic supper.

  • Hitting the road this summer? For many, the summer months allow for travel to destinations beyond the confines of Erie. Nash Library is featuring a display on travel, both worldwide and domestic, in its first-floor lobby area. Gannon faculty, staff, and administrators are welcome to stop by the library and see this interesting display. If you have an addition to add to the display, please contact Bob Dobiesz at ext. 7395. Enjoy your travels this summer!

  • Monday-Friday, June 25-29Young Writers Workshops, session I: Know a young writer (grades 4-12) who wants to develop their writing? Gannon is offering a series of workshops designed to help students enhance their skills. One-week sessions also will be offered from July 9-13 and July 23-27. Classes will be held daily from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in room 3200 of the Palumbo Center and will be led by Sally LeVan, Ph.D., professor of English, and the teachers of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Writing Project. Scholarship for nursing students announced: Jeanne J. Borowy Tuznik died in March at the age of 87. Prior to her death, she created a $25,000 scholarship to benefit students in the Villa Maria School of Nursing with a demonstrated financial need.
