DR. GARIBALDI AWARDED HONORARY DEGREE, TO SERVE ON FOUNDATION BOARD Dr. Garibaldi recently received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree from Seton Hall University during Seton Hall’s Commencement ceremony in South Orange, N.J. According to Monsignor Robert Sheeran, president of Seton Hall, Garibaldi was chosen for the degree for his “lifelong commitment to Catholic higher education.” “As the president of a diocesan University, this is a special honor to receive this prestigious award from one of the nation’s largest diocesan universities,” Garibaldi said. In addition, Garibaldi recently received a second honor. He has been elected to serve on The Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Educational Foundation Board. The Sister Thea Bowman Foundation was established in 1989 in honor of Sister Thea Bowman (1937-90) to carry on her lifelong mission of providing affordable Catholic higher education to African-American students and adults. Since 1989, the Foundation has helped more than 75 African-American undergraduates earn degrees from Catholic colleges and universities, several of which are in Pennsylvania. As a board member, Garibaldi will help the Foundation set policies, raise scholarship funds, and help find potential scholars. Gannon University also will become one of the schools that will provide scholarship support to and also host Sister Thea Bowman Scholars. “Having known this extraordinary African-American religious educator from Mississippi personally, I am committed to supporting Sister Thea’s mission to help provide African-American students with the necessary financial means to pursue a high quality, Catholic education,” Garibaldi added.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK
Students devote time to service: Sixteen Gannon University students made service trips to Kentucky and to South Dakota following final exams week. The students focused on both volunteerism and spirituality during their travels. The destination for the Kentucky trip was Glenmary Farm, located near Vanceburg. The group that went to South Dakota spent a week at the Cheyenne River Reservation in Whitehorse. During the second week of the trip, they stayed in Rapid City, where social justice education was the focus.
