GANNON TO HOST REGIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE IN JULY Applications are now being accepted for the Regional Summer School of Excellence at Gannon University. Interested students are encouraged to apply by Wednesday, June 20. The free program will run from July 9-13 and July 16-20 and is open to students in Erie, Warren, and Crawford counties. It is designed specifically for high school sophomores and juniors who excel in the sciences. Through the program, students experience intensive laboratory and field site study in the life sciences. The program’s goals include: · To allow students interested in the sciences to work collaboratively as part of a challenging and fun learning experience. · To expose students to life science applications in the fields of medicine, public health, epidemiology, toxicology, environmental health, zoology, ecology, limnology, histology, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, physics, and embryology. · To introduce students to standard methods used in studying and researching environmental science and related issues, including ecological sampling techniques, water chemistry, lake pollution and population dynamics, air pollution, acid rain, and eutrophication. · To educate students on how technology, engineering, chemistry, and biological science each play a role in understanding environmental issues. Participating students are eligible for Gannon scholarships. Sponsors of the program are Gannon University, the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit, the Pennsylvania Governor’s Schools of Excellence, and the Department of Environmental Protection. GLIAC champions: Earlier this month, the Gannon softball team won its first-ever GLIAC championship with a 3-2 win over Grand Valley State in Midland, Mich. The Lady Knights scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Jaclyn Corroto hit an RBI single to score Ann Waters.
