GANNON TO HOST REGIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE IN JULY

Applications are now being accepted for the Regional Summer School of Excellence at Gannon University.

Interested students are encouraged to apply by Wednesday, June 20. The free program will run from July 9-13 and July 16-20 and is open to students in Erie, Warren, and Crawford counties.

It is designed specifically for high school sophomores and juniors who excel in the sciences. Through the program, students experience intensive laboratory and field site study in the life sciences. The program’s goals include:

·        To allow students interested in the sciences to work collaboratively as part of a challenging and fun learning experience.

·        To expose students to life science applications in the fields of medicine, public health, epidemiology, toxicology, environmental health, zoology, ecology, limnology, histology, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, physics, and embryology.

·        To introduce students to standard methods used in studying and researching environmental science and related issues, including ecological sampling techniques, water chemistry, lake pollution and population dynamics, air pollution, acid rain, and eutrophication.

·        To educate students on how technology, engineering, chemistry, and biological science each play a role in understanding environmental issues.

Participating students are eligible for Gannon scholarships.

Sponsors of the program are Gannon University, the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit, the Pennsylvania Governor’s Schools of Excellence, and the Department of Environmental Protection.

News of interest on and around campus...

  • Maroon and Gold Awards: At the May Community Meeting, Dr. Garibaldi announced the winners of this year’s Maroon and Gold Awards. The awards recognize full- and part-time employees who support the university’s Strategic Plan goal of giving “appropriate academic and personal attention to undergraduate and graduate students.” The winners were chosen by several criteria, including: going “above and beyond” to positively impact students; volunteering to help with or attending student activities; and being committed to Gannon. The Gold Award was presented to Ali Schneider, director, Health Services Office. Suzanne Kitts, instructor, sport and exercise science, was nominated by her students and chosen for the Maroon Award.

  • Tenure update the following have been approved for academic tenure, effective with the 2007-08 academic year: Mark Jubulis, Ph.D., associate professor, history, political science and legal studies; Gong Chen, Ph.D., professor, mechanical engineering; Linda Fleming, Ph.D., associate professor, counseling psychology; Patrick Headley, Ph.D., assistant professor, mathematics; Carlos Mamani, Ph.D., assistant professor, foreign languages and cultures; Deborah West, assistant professor, Nash Library; Scott Steinbrink, Ph.D., assistant professor, mechanical engineering; Catherine Gillespie, assistant professor, physician assistant program; and Sister Min-Shik Kim, Ph.D., associate professor, nursing. They were notified of their approvals by Dr. Garibaldi.

  • Gannon colleagues are invited to participate in Summer Orientation 2007 events. Four sessions are scheduled: June 17-18, June 24-25, July 8-9, and July 15-16. You and a spouse/guest are invited to attend the Sunday evening Parent Socials on June 17 and 24 and July 8 and 15 in the Yehl Ballroom, from 9-10:30 p.m. A Picnic Supper will be served in the Waldron Center at 5:15 p.m. on the four Orientation Sundays: June 17 and 24 and July 8 and 15. Members of your immediate family are invited to attend with you, compliments of New Student Services.  If you are interested in attending, please contact New Student Services at ext. 7597 by the Thursday preceding each dinner to make a reservation and request your ticket(s). A ticket will be required for each person for admission to the picnic supper.

  • Friday, June 8Gannon Universitys Erie Chamber Orchestra: Conducted and directed by Bruce Morton Wright. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at St. Patrick Church, 130 East Fourth St., and will feature the music of Aaron Copland and Howard Hanson.

  • Sunday-Monday, June 17-18Summer Orientation Session I: Gannon employees and a spouse/guest are invited to attend the Sunday evening Parent Socials. A picnic supper will be served in the Waldron Center at 5:15 p.m. on the four Orientation Sundays; members of your immediate family are invited to attend with you, compliments of New Student Services.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

GLIAC champions: Earlier this month, the Gannon softball team won its first-ever GLIAC championship with a 3-2 win over Grand Valley State in Midland, Mich. The Lady Knights scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Jaclyn Corroto hit an RBI single to score Ann Waters.
