LAUREATE TO SPEAK AT ENGLISH AWARDS NIGHT
Gannon University’s annual
English Awards Night again will feature a prominent guest speaker.
Former United States Poet
Laureate Ted Kooser will be the featured speaker for the event and
will read a selection of his poetry. Kooser is regarded as one of the most
distinguished voices in contemporary poetry.
In addition, during the
event the winners of the High School Poetry Contest will be announced and
students will receive their awards.
English Awards Night is
free and open to the public and will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday,
April 16 in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Center. For more information,
contact Berwyn Moore, associate professor, English department, at ext.

More about Ted Kooser
Kooser served as U.S. Poet
Laureate from 2004-06. He has published 11 books of poetry and his many
awards include the Pulitzer Prize, the Pushcart Prize, the Stanley Kunitz
Prize, the James Boatwright Prize, and two National Endowment for the Arts
fellowships.
His poems have been
published in numerous journals, including The Hudson Review, The
American Poetry Review, The Atlantic Monthly, and The New
Yorker. His books of essays and literary criticism have won the
Nebraska Book Award for Nonfiction and the Gold Award for Autobiography,
among others.
Kooser’s
newspaper column, “American Life in Poetry,” is a public service project
appearing weekly in newspapers nationally. He is editor and publisher of
Windflower Press, professor of English at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln, and for many years was an insurance executive. Kooser’s
poems are praised for their clarity and accessibility and for, as The
New York Times noted, “their genius for making the ordinary
sacramental.”

note: Yesterday’s
(Sunday, April 13) Sunday Living section of the Erie Times-News ran
a lengthy feature article on Kooser and English Awards Night.
