STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN FAST TO RAISE AWARENESS, MONEY

Some 60 Gannon University students will go hungry so as to raise both money and awareness of worldwide hunger.

The students will participate in the university’s eighth annual 30-Hour Fast. They will begin fasting at 12 p.m. Friday, March 31, and will consume only water, milk, and juice until 6 p.m. Saturday, April 1.

When the fast is over, the students will participate in an Agape dinner held in “the spirit of Christian love.” Over a simple meal of rice and vegetables, the students will discuss what they learned during the fast.

The students will be doing more than fasting, however.

During the 30 hours, they will perform community service and volunteer work at Independence Court of Erie, 41 West Gore Road; House of Healing; Brevillier Village Housing and Health Care, 5416 East Lake Road; and St. Mary’s Home of Erie, 607 East 26th Street. The students will interact with the residents and help with spring cleaning, among other activities.

And, Jamie Williams, a student campus minister at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Friday night will share with the Gannon students her experiences involving community service and volunteer work.

The goal of the fast is to raise $1,000 for Catholic Relief Services, a national organization. Participating students have been asking family and friends to sponsor them.

Promoting awareness of global issues, particularly hunger, is also a goal. The students will learn about factors that cause hunger and poverty around the world.

For more information, contact Campus Ministry at ext. 7434.
