WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH TO TAKE CENTER STAGE ON CAMPUS

Gannon University will observe Women’s History Month through a series of campus events.

Tuesday, March 11GUSSA Women’s History Month Tea: The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Founder’s Room of Nash Library. A light lunch will be served. This event is open only to Gannon University students, faculty, and staff.

Tuesday, March 27 – Gannon’s traditional Gathering in Praise will be devoted to celebrating Women’s History Month. The mass will begin at 11 a.m. in the Schuster Art Gallery, third floor of Nash Library. Open to the general public. For more information call 7434.

In addition, Schuster Art Gallery is featuring a display in celebration of Women’s History Month. The exhibit, Women’s Art-Women’s Vision, was made possible through the artistic contributions of women at Gannon who wanted to commemorate this special month.

The display includes works of painting, photography, needlepoint, cross stitching, crocheting, quilting, doll making, patchwork, stained glass, knitting, embroidery, hand painted eggs, jewelry making, tissue box covers, pastel, a floral arrangement, poetry, and other forms of creative writing. The items were submitted by nearly 30 Gannon faculty, staff, and administrators.

Schuster Gallery is open during regular library hours. The exhibit will be on display through Monday, March 31.

 

 

RECENT NEWS AND HIGHLIGHTS

News of interest on and around campus...

  • Many thanks to Gannon colleagues for their help with recent media interview requests. Sharon Krahe, director of financial aid, appeared live in-studio at WICU-12 to discuss the recent decision by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) to stop issuing student loans, at least for the time being. Arlene Montevecchio, director of the Gannon Center for Social Concerns, did interviews with WICU-12 and the Erie Times-News on the alternative spring break service trips made by nearly 30 Gannon students last week. Anne O’Neill-Klemensic, instructor and program director, advertising communications, did an interview with John Guerriero of the Erie Times-News on the status of Erie as a test market. Guerriero’s story was in response to a television ad, negative to presidential hopeful John McCain, that aired locally. Dr. Garibaldi and Susan Black Keim, vice president for University Advancement, did an interview with Erica Erwin of the Erie Times-News on The Power To Transform Campaign; the article is on page 3B of todays (March 10) paper. Ray Luniewski did an interview with Robb Frederick of the Erie Times on everything that goes into changing the clocks on campus for Daylight Savings Time. Luniewski also was photographed near the clock outside the Zurn Science Center.

  • Social Work conference: The seventh annual Social Work Conference on Mental Health, presented by the Gannon Social Work program and the Mental Health Association of Northwestern Pennsylvania, will be held Friday, March 28. Registrations still are being accepted; the event will be held in the Waldron Center. The cost is $40 and includes lunch and seven continuing education credits. Topics for the day include mental wellness, managed care, dual diagnosis, childhood mental health, advocacy and activism for mental health consumers, and mental health and aging.   • Nominations are being accepted for the Maroon and Gold Awards. If you know a deserving faculty, staff, or administrative member who demonstrates exceptional effort in supporting our students, please consider nominating them. The nomination form and an explanation of the awards can be found at  http://my.gannon.edu/special/rent_forms/default.html.   • The workshop titled, “Advising Minority Students,” has been changed to Tuesday, March 18 from 1-2:30 p.m. in CETL. CAMPUS EVENTS

  • Wednesday, March 12 Senior Salute: 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first floor of Palumbo. The event allows Gannon seniors to finalize all of their graduation details in one place. Seniors can pick up caps and gowns, order graduation announcements and class rings, and meet with staff from Registrar’s, Bookstore, Financial Aid, Alumni Relations, Career and Counseling Services, Graduate Admissions, Continuing Education, Campus Ministry, and more. Participating seniors will be eligible for valuable prizes that will be displayed in the bookstore window. Refreshments will be available throughout the day.

  • Friday, March 14Gannon University’s Erie Chamber Orchestra: Conducted and directed by Bruce Morton Wright. This concert will feature soloist Eric Mann (guitar) and will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel.

  • Friday-Saturday, March 14-15Gannon University’s Schuster Theatre: Jane Austen’s Love and Freindship (sic) will serve as this year’s Alex Clemente Fundraiser. Performances will begin at 8 p.m. both nights, and tickets are $15. For more information, contact the Schuster Theatre box office at ext. 7494, or call ext. 7493. Proceeds will benefit the Clemente Fund for Performing and Related Arts at Gannon University.

  • Saturday, March 29International Night: This always festive event will be held in the Hammermill Center and will begin with a dinner buffet at 6 p.m., to be followed with entertainment (music and dancing) at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are as follows: children under 12 admitted free; $5 for students and children ages 12-18; $10 for senior citizens and military personnel; and $15 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at the information desk of the Waldron Center.
