NEW SPORT MANAGEMENT AND MARKETING
DEGREE APPROVED
Gannon University is poised to enter the burgeoning sports industry
through a new bachelor’s degree program in sport management and marketing.
The program was approved by
the Gannon Board of Trustees at its February meeting and will become part
of the university’s curriculum beginning in the fall 2006 semester.
Providing specialized
education in management and marketing, with a focus on the industry of
sport, is the main objective of the program, said Jason P. Willow, Ph.D.,
an assistant professor of sport and exercise science who will serve as
coordinator of the new program.
“Recent estimates have
suggested that organized sport is a $211 billion a year industry, more
than twice the size of the auto industry,” Willow said. “With American
and, perhaps more appropriately, worldwide obsession with all levels of
sport, it is only fitting that colleges and universities come to the
forefront in preparing students to be leaders in the field.”
The program will be
interdisciplinary in nature, with the university’s existing programs in
business administration and sport and exercise science collaborating on
it.
According to organizers,
graduates of the program will be qualified to pursue careers in a number
of fields, including in professional sports and related services,
associations, media, intercollegiate athletics, facilities, event
management, recreation, retail, health, fitness,
marketing and promotions, sports communications, and others.
Program graduates also will be able to pursue advanced degrees in sports
administration, sports management, or school athletics.
The program
has been designed according to standards set forth by the North American
Society for Sport Management and the Sport Management Program Review
Council. Organizers hope to have the program accredited within five years.

Important note to faculty members, from provost and
vice president for academic affairs Keith Taylor, Ph.D.:
the
review and revision of the Liberal Studies Core is an opportunity to work
together toward excellence as a University and across all academic
programs. The importance of the
Liberal Studies Core certainly
contributes to the passion in the current discussion. We need to continue
with open and professional dialogue to clarify and articulate where we
have been, how we have gotten to where we are, and, most importantly, what
we need to do to get to where we want to be: an excellent University with
an excellent Liberal Studies Core curriculum. A full faculty meeting will
be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 9 in room 101 of Zurn
Science Center.

The Gannon Community is invited to attend a group
presentation of the Professional Portfolios of the advanced students in
the Community Counseling Program. Students enrolled in the GPSY690 Seminar
in Counseling will present their Professional Counseling Portfolios, which
demonstrate their competencies and development. The presentation is
scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Wednesday April 5, in room 2224 of the Palumbo
Center. Students, faculty, staff, and administrators are invited to see
the competencies and training outcomes of the Community Counseling Program
as evidenced in the students’ professional portfolios. This is also a
great opportunity for the Gannon Community to show its support and learn
more about the competencies of the students.
