More about Steve Scully

Steve Scully is C-SPAN’s Senior Executive Producer and Political Editor. Since 1990, Scully has been responsible for the planning and editing of all campaign programming, including presidential and congressional elections for the public affairs cable network. In addition, he manages a team of field producers who are responsible for the coverage of law and the courts, history, and international programming.

Scully also serves as a regular host of the Washington Journal, a daily, live, three-hour public affairs program. And, in 2003, he assumed the Amos P. Hostetter Chair at the University of Denver, teaching a course on media, politics, and public policy issues via cable fiber line between Washington, D.C., and Denver. It is the only course of its kind in the country, linking students 1,700 miles from Washington to newsmakers in the nation’s capital.

Before coming to C-SPAN, Scully covered politics and local government as a reporter with WSEE-channel 35 in Erie. He also worked as a reporter and anchor at WHEC-TV in Rochester, N.Y.

Scully previously taught politics at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y., leading courses on basic news writing skills and on media ownership. In 1988-89, he was an instructor at Nazareth College in Rochester, where his class focused on comparative study of the media and campaign strategies in shaping the media message.

He earned a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and a bachelor’s degree in communication and political science from

American University in Washington, D.C.

Scully sits on a number of national civic boards, and currently serves on the Executive Board of the White House Correspondents’ Association. In the December, 2003 edition of Cable Fax Magazine, he was listed as one of cable’s 100 “Heavy Hitters.” In January, 2004, New York’s Newsday listed Scully as one of the media’s most influential movers and shakers in political programming. His work in the 1992 presidential campaign resulted in the cable industry’s highest honor, the Golden Ace Award.

Scully is an Erie native and is the 14th child in a family of 16 that also has five sets of twins. He and his wife, Kathryn, live in Virginia and have three children.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

National Catholic Colleges Week: Most Rev. Bishop Donald Trautman on Thursday joined the Gannon Community for an Evening of Recollection as part of the university’s celebration of National Catholic Colleges Week. During his welcome in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel, the Bishop told the participating faculty and staff that The Lord knows our personal sufferings. Jesus too experienced weariness, discouragement, and disillusionment. But he persisted and persevered. The celebration also included adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, a guest speaker, Dr. Michael Galligan-Stierle of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, and Archbishop Gannon Day.
